www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, July 18, 2013 | 8 Longo's Corks serves up wine, beer while shopping by Dominik Kurek Oakville Beaver Staff Whether you're in a rush and don't have time to cook, or if you just want to relax and slow things down a little more, Longo's might have the place for you. The Corks restaurant at the new Oakville Longo's, at 469 Cornwall Rd., is inviting the community to check out its selection of Ontario craft beers and boutique wines. You can order these alongside one of the restaurant's menu items, which are made right in the store's kitchen or just slap together your own sandwich from the groceries you bought, the space is open to the customers. "We have a great selection of craft beers and boutique wines all from Ontario," said Joey Bernaudo, director of deli and bakery and Longo's. "It really completes the experience of shopping. You have all these great flavours, different things to try and the wines are just a great compliment to that." This is the third Corks location and the first outside a Toronto Longo's store. The restaurant has a selection of seven beers on tap, including Oakville-based Cameron's, and 18 varieties of bottled beer, and approximately 20 wines. There are no other types of alcohol. "It really stemmed from the idea of the Longo's customers wanting to be able to order a fresh baked pizza or chicken wings or sandwiches that we have to offer and have a glass of wine or beer with their meal," said Lesley Martin, wine and beer specialist for Corks. "These tend to be the beverages that people would have with a meal, beer and wine, as opposed to a vodka soda or something like that. Beer and wine keeps it very simple in terms of our concept. We're able to do a completely local selection." The restaurant buys directly from the beer and wine makers. "It's always fresh. We buy small kegs so they're constantly fresh and they're being shipped from the producer," Martin said. The reason Longo's has decided to go completely local for wine and beer offerings stems from its retail tradition. "At Longo's our roots are in produce. When local is available, we buy local and we want to build on that cornerstone or that philosophy for the organization," said Bernaudo. The concept of offering beers and wines from small-scale producers is not new, but it is rare. "There are other small bars that have whole craft beer selections but they're few and far between and very hard to find," Martin said. The same with the wine selections. It's very rare to just find an entire Ontario list." Bernaudo said the restaurant is family friendly and people are invited to come up whether eating alone or with an entire fam- ily, with strollers welcome. The restaurant is located upstairs of the new store and has a fully licensed patio on the main floor as well. It is open during store hours. Along with its regular menu, there are seasonal menus and daily promos. 30 YEAR WARRANTY!
