Oakville resident inspired to Swim for the Cure by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Thursday, July 18, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville resident Debbie Bang and about 30 other swimmers will plunge into the waters of the Severn River on Saturday to kick off this year's Swim for the Cure. This will be the 13th year Bang has organized and participated in the event, which so far has raised more than $166,000 for breast cancer research. She said this year is special as it will see a number of young relay teams take part. One of these teams has watched Swim for the Cure take place over the 12 years and this time around the group was inspired to participate in the aquatic endurance event. "The swim is about setting a goal and believing it is achievable. Our crew, supporters and the other swimmers make it possible for us to finish; just like those journeying with breast cancer," said Bang. "This year several young people will be swimming instead of watching or paddling beside a parent; their willingness to take on such an endurance event is truly inspiring." Bang has not shortage of reasons for organizing and participating in Swim for the Cure. For one thing, she said, she loves to swim, but she has also witnessed the devastating impact cancer has had on family and friends. She said she remembers her grandmother's struggle with breast cancer, which resulted in a mastectomy (the removal of a breast). "Seeing that scar had a pretty profound effect on me as a young person," said Bang. "It made a difference in the work I did and the knowledge I wanted to gain. I'm a nurse by profession." Bang's grandmother survived her breast cancer, however, an aunt Bang was very close to did not. Just last year Bang said one of her good friends was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and now faces a bleak prognosis. Bang said this woman's daughter participated in Swim for the Cure last year and will do so again on Saturday. The 12.8 km swim begins at the Severn Riv- er Swift Rapids Lock 43 and ends at Big Chute Lock 44. The swim takes three and a half to seven hours with most swimmers arriving at Big Chute between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information or to make a donation visit www.swimforthecure.ca or http://bit. ly/13wjWsj.
