Gabrielle's Ride helping children with heart disorders by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, July 18, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com One in four children suffer from a stroke as a result of a heart problem -- most often, congenital heart disease. That statistic comes from Dr. Gabrielle deVeber, a pediatric neurologist and professor of pediatrics at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), senior scientist at the SickKids Research Institute, and doctor of the late Gabrielle Ide Cinanni of Oakville. Gabrielle died of congenital heart disease on Nov. 9, 2010. She was just five years old. Since then, it has been her mom Nikki Ide's mission to keep her daughter's memory alive, and help other children with similar conditions, through Gabrielle's Ride charity cycling event. It's a mission that deVeber says she hopes will support future collaborative initiatives to develop consensus in the medical community on how to prevent or manage stroke in children with cardiac disorders. "From the point of view of the impact it (Gabrielle's Ride) has had on these kids, I think it's really aimed at increasing awareness that children have stroke, which is still an under-recognized problem for children coming into the emergency room... because of a lack of physician awareness," and it's connection to heart issues, said deVeber. Ride raised $80K in first year In its inaugural year, Gabrielle's Ride raised approximately $80,000, which went towards supporting an international conference on cardiac stroke in children. "In the past, the neurologists who deal with the stroke side and the cardiologists who deal with heart problems have had no good space to connect and talk together about how to prevent stroke," deVeber said. "So, the funds allowed the development of this international conference to be held in San Diego in February 2014... It's going to be very high impact and result in a new level of co-operation between people who do research on cardiac conditions and dy in her life and turned it into something meaningful to try to make things better for other people's children," said deVeber. The second annual Gabrielle's Ride is slated for Sunday, July 21 at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, 3070 Neyagawa Blvd., and participants can sign up for a 100-kilometre, 50K, 25K, 10K or tyke ride. This year, event organizers hope for 700 participants and to raise $100,000. `A labour of love' Ide said she felt overwhelmed and proud after last year's success, calling it all a "labour of love" -- the event is run by more than 150 volunteers. "I think it shows there has been a need and I wish it had been available for Gabrielle. I know it would have made a difference for her," Ide said in a previous interview with the Beaver. "I'm so proud of her life, that she's still giving to these kids to make a difference." see Proceeds on p.11 Gabrielle Ide Cinanni. stroke, as well as the physicians who care for those problems." The first edition of the 100-kilometre charity bike ride through Oakville was held last year and Ide called it an incredible success as more than 400 participants raised thousands of dollars for SickKids -- where Gabrielle was a patient.
