I've never been a big fan of nostalgia. I enjoy occasionally embracing a fond memory , but try to live in the here-andnow , not pining for the past, or casting an eye too far into the future. I think what turned me off nostalgia was the people I've met who live perpetually in the past. Honestly , if you're over 30-years-old and still prattling on about high school, you need to get a life. Or, at least, reevaluate your current life. Nostalgia has been considered a disorder since a Swiss physician coined the term back in the 17th century. But, according to a recent story in The New York Times, over the past decade doctors at Britain's University of Southampton, led by Dr. Constantine Sedikides, have been researching nostalgia and nding it to be, well, healthy. Having determined that nostalgia "made me feel good my life had roots and continuity ," while providing "a texture to my life and giving me the strength to move forward," Sedikides became a pioneer in the eld. His extensive studies have determined nostalgia can counteract loneliness, boredom and anxiety. It can make people more generous and more tolerant. He believes couples feel closer when sharing nostalgic memories. And, imagine this: on a cold winter's day , nostalgia can actually make a person feel warmer. The doctor's research has found nostalgia is common and even kids recall with fondness a particular birthday or vacation. Topics over which we get nostalgic are also fairly common: friends, family , weddings, births, holi- days, sunsets, music, and the days before technology ruled our lives (OK, I may have made up that last one). According to Sedikides, the bottom line is "nostalgia makes us a bit more human." So, I'm going to attempt to allow a little more nostalgia into my life. But, please: don't invite me to any reunions. And, don't mention some play you made on the football eld a decade or two ago.
