The President Elect from the previous year takes over as the new Club President. In Oakville this annual tradition brought three new leaders to the table. Rudy Habesch, President, Rotary Club of Oakville; Bill Koopman, President, Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar; and Susan Sheppard, President, Rotary Club of Oakville West will lead their individual clubs and collaborate with each other to make a difference locally and beyond. The 2013-14 Rotary theme is `Engage Rotary, Change Lives'. Ron Burton, Rotary International President, commented at his inaugural, "It's a real challenging theme; I call it an action theme. It is going to require you to do something. Rolling up your sleeves to pass out pancakes... or any of the other kinds of hands-on projects are really what creates the fellowship that makes Rotary extremely worthwhile." To that end, each of the clubs does exactly that. Rotarians sell ice cream waffles, host a Ribfest event and organize golf tournaments, just to name a few local initiatives. These types of activities help build awareness and raise money to support the Oakville community and those in need around the world. Together, we fundraise for the hospital, provide healthy food for kids, and designate funds for post-secondary education, as well as sponsor eradication of Polio worldwide. With continued support from the public and our event sponsors, all of you will help all of us, as we Engage Rotary and Change Lives. Thank you Oakville! Bill Koopman, RCOT Susan Sheppard, RCOW Rudy Habesch, RCO "The floods came fast and furious and affected communities along a 300km watershed from the mountains to the Saskatchewan border. Major damage was done in several communities including Canmore, Calgary, High River, Medicine Hat, two First Nations Communities and lesser damage in other communities. In High River alone, a town of 15,000 people, over 1000 homes are not habitable." Penned by Pat Killoran, Governor, Rotary District 5360, this was only a part, though poignant, of a very important request for help. Albertans, Rotarians and government have responded with both volunteer time and financial contributions, but they need as much help as possible to rebuild lives and communities. This ask for help goes beyond Alberta and out to the rest of Canada, in particular to Rotarians and friends of Rotary. On behalf of Rotary District 5360, we ask for your financial support to help fellow Canadians recover from this life-altering event. Donations may go to West Calgary Rotary Club District 5360 Flood Relief, 4 Parkdale Crescent N.W., Calgary, Alberta T2N 3T8. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $25.
