Infectious disease report by Julia Le Metroland West Media Group 13 | Friday, July 26, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Regional Municipality of Halton In 2012, 1,765 cases of notifiable infectious diseases were reported to Halton Region's health department for investigation, according to a Regional report released July 2. Of that, 754 cases were chlamydia, followed by influenza (183) and campylobacteriosis (156), an infectious disease caused by eating or handling contaminated food or drinking contaminated beverages. The number of cases reported is slightly less from the previous year's 1,784 cases that were reported. The report states most of the one per cent decrease in 2012 from 2011 can be attributed to a decrease in the number of cases of chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease. Physicians are required by law to report cases of certain infectious diseases to the local medical officer of health for the Region's surveillance and study. The Region's health department then uses the data to prevent and reduce infections through education and certification programs like food handler training, and clinical services that include immunization, sexual health and travel health clinics. In comparison with the whole province, Halton's age-standardized incident rates are significantly lower for infectious diseases like chlamydia, influenza, hepatitis C and gonorrhea. However, the age-standardized incident rate of the West Nile virus was significantly higher in Halton when compared to Ontario.
