Some things you should fix before they break, because if they break it can be very distressing. Take your vehicle’s fan belt. Please. It’s a simple thing, just a piece of rubber. But it runs the alternator, which provides electrical power and keeps the battery charged. Without that electrical power, your car will run for only as long as the battery lasts â€" maybe 10 minutes. If you’re lucky, maybe 30 minutes. For many cars, other things run from belts, too. Power steering, water pump, air conditioning â€" with the exception of the water pump, these are things you can live without while you limp to a repair centre. Some cars have several belts, others a single, long belt that does everything. The belts today are mosdy V-shaped. They have cogs on the underside to allow a better fit around the pulley and increased air circulation. The air circulation keeps them cooler, so they will last longer. When you inspect your belts, look for cracks in the rubber, frayed edges, missing cogs â€" anything to suggest it’s getting brittle or worn. Replacing a belt when you’re having an oil change is easy. (JUST WEST OF DORVAL) 905-845-1681 Wednesdsay July 26,2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C7 Cadillac links technology and style By Jim Robinson SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER My neighbor across the street, a TTC bus driver who used to do the GO bus run to Barrie, grasped the significance of Cadillac’s Night Vision system immediately as we took the car for a spin one night. “Man,†he said, “would this ever be great in the fog.†The 2000 Cadillac DeVille is the first car in the world to incorporate the benefits of infrared vision technology and use it for everyday use. Infrared came into its own during the Gulf War, allowing coalition bomber pilots to see targets on the ground and knock them out. What they saw is what we saw on TV and it its benefits in peace time as well as war time were obvious. Night time driving is only 28 per cent of total driving in North America, but 55 per cent of accidents happen after the sun goes dpwn. In the U.S., 62 per cent of all pedestrian fatalities happen after dark. Normal headlights at 100 kmh allow a dri-, ver just 3.5 seconds to react. With Cadillac’s new Night Vision reaction, that time is four times longer at at 15 seconds. In my personal experience at city speeds (40 km) it was possible to see a dog rooting through overturned garbage two blocks ahead. Created by Raytheon, who make the infrared missiles, Cadillac uses thermal imaging to create a picture of the heat energy emitted by an object ahead. Everything, even trees in winter, produce some kind of heat. A camera mounted in the grille where the Caddy crest normally resides, takes in heat and focuses it on a one-inch square reflector. This in turn is projected onto the windshield in a Heads Up Display (HUD) that’s 7 inches by 4 inches just below the line of sight ahead for the driver. Now Night Vision is not meant to replace normal sight driving at night, but it is an auxiliary. It takes about one minute to warm up but then when it clicks into view, your concept of vision is in for a new dimension. People light up like neon signs. You can see cars crossing an intersection ahead from six blocks away. On lonely roads in the winter, you see the outline of the trees on each side. Even clouds in the sky, because they reflect heat from the ground, show up. I could go on and on, but it is just one facet of the systems built into the 2000 model year DeVilles that make them probably the safest cars in the world. In addition to Night Vision, the DeVille uses Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) in the tail lights and centre safety light because they illuminate faster and almost never burn out. DeVille comes with Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist that American road that is far from dead. DeVille’s current owners, numbering nearly two million, are remarkably loyal. Sixty-nine percent stay with Cadillac, and 84 percent choose a GM product when they trade in a DeVille. By 2005, almost 40 percent of the buyers in DeVille’s segment will be boomers, most of whom have driven imports at some time. Instead of creating a wide chasm between the previous DeVille and the 2000 version, Cadillac chose a bridge strategy that began with styling enhancements to the 1997 DeVille. For 2000 there will be three models, the base DeVille, the DeVille High Luxury Sedan (DHS) and the DeVille Touring Sedan (DHS). Both get the latest version of the Northstar V8, the DHS producing 275 hp and the more sporting DTS producing 300 hp. Wheeling around Ontario in the DTS version (tested at 570,880) is a marvelous place to be. Once you begin to take in all the luxury features and amenities, those old Cadillac slogans like “the standard of the world...†start to ring through and push the heritage button that keeps previous buyers, as noted above, coming back. But to get through the X-gens, the DeVille does away with the old Brougham styling that served DeVille for three decades. The sedan now opts for a stretched Seville STS look that is more evident from the rear. Interior volume of 115.3-cu.-ft. is closer to a minivan than a car and that’s one reason why the standard trizone (yep folks - three areas) climate control comes in handy this time of the year when windows mist up. For those who don’t travel light, the trunk is 19.1-cu.-ft. With a long wheelbase and a curb weight to 4,047 pounds, the DTS is a kinetic force to be reckoned with. The DTS comes with the optional 17X7 inch alloy wheels with touring tires to match which takes care of tire contact. The DTS and DHS both have the suspension-road handling sensor system that activates the shocks and brakes to keep the big Caddy on an even keel when you start to exceed the limits. Even when I purposely tried (under controlled conditions) to throw the car sideways and make it spin, it fought back as if almost sensing I was trying to do it harm. What’s important here is, that should the average driver start to lose control, the system will give that driver time to sense what is going on and then retake control and, with the system’s help, bring the car back on a CADILLAC DEVILLE 2000 AT A GLANCE BODY STYLE: four-door, full-size sedan; DeVille, DHS, and DTS trim levels i front engine/ front drive ENGINE: 4.5-litre DOHC V8 DHS(275 ! i hp, 300 ft/lb), DTS (300 hp, 295 ft/lb). At $2,595, the optional Night Vision system is something I would love to have retro-fitted to my own family car. On foggy and snow-filled nights coming home, you not only would see the road ahead, but uses sonar ranging to sound a chime when backing up too close to an object or person. It comes with anti-lock brakes, traction control, StabiliTrack 2.0 (pitch and yaw control), Magnasteer and continuously variable road sensing suspension. Even the seats are specially designed with the safety belts in the seat and they are deployed by pyrotechnic pre-tensioners. The DHS and DTS models come with rain sensing windshield wipers that work when the drops start to fall. It’s quite a surprise to go through the car wash and see the wipers suddenly jump into full wipe speed because of the amount of water being sensed. Lastly, every DeVille is available with the GM OnStar system that uses GPS positioning and 24-hour service with live on-duty attendants to help via telephone solve any problems, or just provide directions. And that’s just the safety story which gives some idea of the thought and engineering that has gone into the DeVille, an icon of the The introduction of the 2000 DeVille continues a revitalization of Cadillac that began with the restyled 1998 Seville STS and continues into the hot-selling Escalade SUV Last year Cadillac also gained widespread attention with the introduction of the Evoq concept roadster, an embodiment of Cadillac’s “art and science†vision for its future products. In addition, Cadillac unveiled the Catera Sport and Catera Steinmetz concept car, and announced that Cadillac will race at Le Mans in the 24 Hours race in June 2000. We’ve seen several North American manufacturers including Cadillac, mistakenly try to build European luxury cars. Sticking to the knitting is a truism for cars just as it is in any field and people still definitely want and aspire to the large North American luxury sedan. » The old American lead sled may be dead, but there’s still a lot of life left in the Cadillac DeVille.
