With the civic holiday long weekend approaching, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remind motorists to slow down, give space and drive cautiously if they see emergency vehicles at the side of the road. Ontario's Move Over Law applies to all drivers who are approaching a police car, firetruck or ambulance stopped on the roadside with its lights flashing near their lane of traffic. Drivers are required to slow down and pass with caution, but if the road has multiple lanes, drivers must also move over into another lane, if it can be done safely. OPP warning motorists to drive with caution According to OPP Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey far too many drivers ignore this law, according to a recent OPP press release. "Since 1989, we have lost five OPP officers who were tending to their duties on the side of the road when they were killed by approaching vehicles and many of our emergency partners have also died at the hands of careless drivers in the same situation," said Beechey. Beechey is reminding motorists that because Ontario's Move Over Law was introduced 10 years ago, the grace period during which officers let people off with a warning is no longer in effect. Violations of the law carry a possible $400 to $1,200 fine and three demerit points upon conviction. Failing to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles is not the only bad behaviour the OPP will be on the lookout for this long weekend either. "Over the 2012 Civic holiday long weekend, we lost five people in motor vehicle collisions within OPP jurisdiction and this year our officers will be on alert for people who 3 | Thursday, August 1, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com display aggressive driving habits, those who drive while impaired or distracted and those who are not wearing seatbelts," said Chief Superintendent Don Bell, Commander of the OPP Highway Safety Division. OPP officers will also be highly visible on the water and on trails, laying charges against people who show a disregard for public safety while boating or off-roading this weekend. Bell said six people have died in off-road vehicle incidents so far this year and alcohol was a factor in four of those fatalities. continued from p.1 been exposed to the measles: · Trafalgar Presbyterian Church, 354 Upper Middle Rd., Oakville, July 21, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. · Sunnyside Grill, 450 Appleby Line, Burlington, July 21, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. · TD Canada Trust, 3471 Wyecroft Rd., Oakville, July 22, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. · Home Depot, 3300 South Service Rd., Oakville, July 23, 9 a.m.-noon, and July 24, 9 a.m.-noon · North Burlington Medical Centre Walk-in Clinic, 1960 Appleby Line, Burlington, July 24, 6:30-9 p.m., and July 26, noon-5 p.m. · Tansley Woods Community Centre, 1996 Itabashi Way, Burlington, July 27, 9 a.m.-noon · Hopedale Presbyterian Church, 156 Third Line, Oakville, July 28, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. · Walmart, Appleby Line and Dundas Street, Burlington, July 28, 1-3:30 p.m. Stay at home if you're infectious INJURED?
