OAK swimmers win Summer Games medals Sixth annual LOST Race Saturday Oakville Aquatic Club member Evan White won three individual medals in the first five days of competition at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que. White claimed gold in the male 200-metre breaststroke and 200m butterfly while earning a bronze in the 400m individual medley. OAK teammate Gamal Assaad also won a medal for Ontario, finishing second in the male 200m butterfly. Assaad was also fifth in the 50m butterfly. The Canada Summer Games began Friday, Aug. 2 and will conclude Saturday, Aug. 17. More than 12,000 athletes are expected to compete in the Games, which are the largest multi-sport event in Canada. In addition to swimming, competition is also being held in athletics, baseball, basketball, canoe-kayak, cycling, diving, fencing, golf, rowing, sailing, soccer, softball, tennis, triathlon, volleyball and wrestling. Chetrat 18th in world championship debut Oakville Aquatic Club product Zack Chetrat finished just shy of qualifying for the men's 200-metre butterfly semifinals at the 2013 FINA World Championships last week in Barcelona. Chetrat swam a personal-best 1:57.92, good for an 18th-place finish. 25 | Thursday, August 8, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Sports Briefs "I was thrilled with that race. I missed the semifinal by two spots but it was my first time under 1:58, which has been my goal all season," said Chetrat. The two-time University of Toronto male athlete of the year made his world championship debut this year after finishing seventh in the 200m butterfly at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. "Overall it's been a great learning experience the whole summer, coming from (Kazan) to here. What I felt most of all at this meet was, I wasn't scared of the big guys," Chetrat said. "Watching them race in the finals the other day I was thinking `They're just getting up and doing it the same as anybody else.' That really gave me a good confidence to swim this race." Runner earns silver at Athletics Ontario meet Oakville resident Zaria Armstrong won a silver medal at the recent Athletics Ontario Bantam, Midget, Youth Championships at York University. Armstrong, a member of the Burlington Track Club, ran the midget girls' 100-metres in 12.59 seconds to place second and also turned in a fifth-place finish in the 200m. More than 100 people are expected to swim along the Lake Ontario shoreline of Oakville this weekend as they participate in the sixth annual LOST Race. Saturday's event, hosted by the Oakville-based Lake Ontario Swim Team, will feature a 3.8-kilometre course that begins at the water's edge at the foot of Maple Grove Drive and ends in Lakeshore Park, near the Navy Street Pier. Swimmers will compete in two divisions (wetsuit and non- wetsuit) and face the challenges of open-water swimming, such as water temperature (typically around 21 degrees Celsius), wind, waves, navigation, floating debris and other competitors. The race will begin at 8 a.m. The fastest swimmers will likely finish in approximately 45 minutes, with the slower ones expected to complete the course two hours later. The 3.8-km course is the same distance as the swim leg of the Ironman Triathlon. NORCECA win would mean World Cup spot continued from p.24 Poland and the United States. Lewis said those opportunities have been few and far between in the past for the Canadian program. "Before, nobody really wanted to play us. We'd always be the ones knocking," he said. "We will be playing tougher games, but that's what you want. You don't want to win against lower teams, you want to always play the best. There's no point in kidding ourselves." Team Canada's next action will come at the NORCECA Men's Volleyball Continental Championship next month in Langley, B.C. The winner of the tournament will qualify for November's World Cup in Japan. "We've never won NORCECA, and we want to win it," said Lewis, pointing out that an appearance at the World Cup might be enough to vault Canada into the world's top 10. "Anything less than that, we will consider a failure." -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports Best Buy CORRECTION NOTICE NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE BEST BUY AUGUST 2 CORPORATE FLYER In the August 2 flyer on Pop-up pages 1 and 2, the Virgin Mobile terms associated with the Sony Xperia J, BlackBerry Curve 9320 and the Samsung Galaxy Ace II x (WebCode: 10243906, 10206349, 10228313, 10228314) were advertised incorrectly.
