Quartet aims to help hospital through sports by Dominik Kurek Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, August 8, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Four local young men are taking advantage of their summer break from university to do something positive for their community while providing some sports fun for their neighbours. The 19-year-olds, who graduated from Abbey Park High School a year ago, are hosting a charity soccer tournament with proceeds benefiting the Oakville Hospital Foundation. Kicks for Change, as they have called their event, will be on Saturday, Aug. 10 at River Oaks Turf Field, 2400 Sixth Line. Registration costs $50 per team. Teams must have five to eight players. "It's a great way to have fun," said one of the organizers Aneesh Thakore. "With that $50, you're making a great difference, but you're also investing towards a good afternoon with yourself and your friends. It's a good day of soccer. You'll be facing other solid teams. It will be good competition." The event is organized by Thakore, Roshan Jeyakumaran, Danyal Ladha and Shan Sangha, all big soccer fans. The tournament will feature 5on5 games (minimum of seven players per team), in 30minute matches. There is a maximum of 16 teams allowed and each team is guaranteed at least three games. There will also be raffle prizes and refreshments. The group hopes to raise $2,000, money that will go to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital to support its youth mental health programs. "People should participate because it's a win-win situation. The money is going towards a great cause, it's going towards an institution we all use and one we should all give back to," said Thakore, a big Manchester United and Toronto FC fan, who is studying bio medical sciences and business in university. "We are fortunate enough to live in Canada where healthcare is free, but that doesn't mean we should give up the responsibility of maintaining the healthcare system. We should take every opportunity we can to give back to this institution that saves lives on a daily basis." The event is co-ed, open to participants aged 16 or older. The event is scheduled from noon to 7 p.m. To register and for more information, visit www.kicksforchange.eventbrite.ca.
