continued from p.1 This year, the celebration will feature five stages and 17 bands, with a mix of new and returning acts. Lakeshore Road will be closed to traffic in the evenings only on both days. Friday headliners include award-winning Canadian jazz pianist, vocalist and songwriter Laila Biali, and the Grammy Award-nominated Heritage Blues Orchestra. The Heritage Blues Orchestra plays an urban blues and jazz-infused style of music. The band was nominated for best blues album at this year's Grammys for its debut album, And Still I Rise. One of the headlining acts Saturday night is Jen Chapin, daughter of the late and legendary folk rocker Harry Chapin. The New York-based jazz-tinged folk vocalist performs as part of a trio, called the Jen Chapin Trio. Sammy Figueroa is a world-renowned percussionist, who has been twice nominated Downtown closes to evening traffic but remains open Saturday for the best Latin jazz album Grammys with his CDs And Sammy Walked In and The Magician. Figueroa has toured with, and appeared on, albums by the likes of the Brecker Brothers, Average White Band, Morrissey-Mullen, John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra and Miles Davis. The Downtown Oakville BIA and its merchants had a loss earlier this summer when the always-popular Midnight Madness was cancelled midway through due to severe weather. This time, organizers are hoping for clear skies. "This is a rain-or-shine event. The only cancellation would be severe weather and lightning. Lightning and severe winds were the reason for the cancellation of Midnight Madness," Plewman said. Plewman said the BIA is hoping as many people as possible come out to enjoy the free music, as well as the downtown stores and restaurants. There will be eight patios set up, the most the festival has had in its 20-year history. The BIA anticipates approximately 80,000 people will visit the festival, compared to last year's 100,000, because of the reduction of a day, Plewman said. Organizers chose not to continue the festival on the Sunday as the day traditionally saw low attendance. "It's a reasonably expensive festival. We're excited to keep it free so this is a change this year," Plewman said. The Lakeshore Road closure will be from 5 p.m. to midnight both Friday and Saturday. In years past, Lakeshore was closed to vehicular traffic all day Saturday, too. Plewman said keeping the street open through the day Saturday should improve traffic flow and make it easier for people to attend. "There are very few family-friendly events that are free these days," Plewman said. "It's nice to be able to come down and take in the festival and the downtown is a beautiful place to be able to take this in. There are a lot of great new restaurants and wonderful boutiques. You can roll it into a whole weekend of dining, shopping and music." During the festival, retailers will offer extended hours. The music begins at 5:30 p.m. today, through midnight. Festivities begin again at 1 p.m. tomorrow through midnight.
