Quinn Kolwich, relatively new to the goaltending position by lacrosse standards, posted a save percentage of .750 at provincials. While the Hawks improved their defence, they also made strides offensively. "They learned patience," the coach said. "(At the beginning of the year) they just wanted to get the ball to the net as fast as they could and score as many goals as possible. They learned about possession of the ball and how keeping control can help you win." In the midst of a comeback from a 7-3 halftime deficit versus Orillia in the B Division final of the recent Ontario Women's Field Lacrosse championships, Goldspink gathered her team to remind them of that message. "We never had a problem with offence," Goldspink said. "At that age, everyone wants to score. I told them, `We have enough goal scorers, the goals will come. This is about defence.'" The Lady Hawks shut their opponents down in the second half and, sure enough, the goals did come. Annabel Child tied up the game with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, forcing overtime. Then, after the teams traded goals in the first extra session to force a sudden-death period, Olivia Bailey scored to give the Hawks a 9-8 win and the gold medal -- one of two earned by Oakville teams at this year's provincials. The U13 Lady Hawks' performance was a strong finish for a team that struggled early in the season. Having won provincial bronze the previous year, Oakville started the season in the A Division (the top division of three at the U13 level). But with only a few returning players as well as some first-time lacrosse players, the team was slow out of the gate. All the while, Goldspink stressed defensive play and as the team learned that Five-year-old Nolan McKay gets some batting practice while Oakville Cricket Club member Manik Bhan does the wicket keeping Sunday at Glenashton Park.
