Young pop musician's hard work paying off by Dominik Kurek Oakville Beaver Staff Artscene 17 | Friday, August 23, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "Connected to your Community" F or artists, trying to break into the business could mean years of hard, unrecognized work. Oakville's Emilia Sadowski on the other hand seems to have hit pure gold on her first attempt. The not-so-overnight, overnight pop sensation is on regular rotation nationwide on the CBC Radio National Network with her very first single on her very first album. "I don't think a songwriter could ask for a better reception to their first four songs they wrote, produced, recorded," the 21-year-old said, who released the EP Flying Colours a few months ago. Her single, Closer All The Time, was first played by the CBC in early June. The music is about life and about life's celebrations and its setbacks, things that have happened to me, being in school for the first few years, being away from home, what I learned, and relationships of course Emilia Sadowski musician Sadowski is not new to music, but new to recording. She has performed on Oakville and area stages for years growing up, such as at the Canada Day Celebrations in Bronte. "This album was really my first foray into the recording process. It was really exciting," she said. "It's a big difference from performing live. It was really exciting and I think it went really well." When Sadowski realized she wanted to get into songwriting, she enrolled into a music program. This September, she'll be entering her final year of the honours music program at York University specializing in vocals and jazz performance. She's doing the five-year program in four, but the extra courseload has not stopped her from recording the pop album. "I go to class during the day, then I would rush over to the studio in the evenings and weekends. Pretty much whenever I had a free second, I was at the recording studio," she said. Now that it's the summer, Sadowski has a bit more time on her hands, so she's writing the music for what will be her full-length al- made her stage debut at age eight when she performed in a church concert. Sadowski chose to study jazz music, saying contemporary music has its roots in jazz and blues. She writes music at home on the piano, saying she either comes up with a lyric or a melody, and then builds from there. As per jazz tradition, the album was recorded like a live performance in the studio, with all the musicians performing together. "It's organic and everything changes depending on the musicians as does the feeling when you're all playing together," Sadowski said. The end result is a pop album that is obviously influenced by the jazz sound. "I really wanted that to come across when we recorded the album," she said. "Now, we have a very live, organic feel to the album." She said she's been thrilled with the praise her album has received from renowned critics. "The music is about life and about life's celebrations and its setbacks, things that have happened to me, being in school for the first few years, being away from home, what I learned, and relationships of course," she said. She said the single Closer All The Time, currently playing on airwaves, is meant to be fun, light and breezy, perfect for top-down driving in the summer. Another song, Homeless & Hungry, is about a homeless person she has run into in the city. The album was produced by George Rondina at Number 9 Studios in Toronto and arranged by keyboardist Joel Lightman. For more information, visit www.emiliamusic.ca.
