continued from p.1 cell towers has been put on hold and we hope the Canadian government will enforce lower RF eld guidelines and follow the example of some other countries. In future, we will keep you informed of all updates along the way." DH Westview's change of heart comes less than two weeks after the Bronte community mobilized against the Bronte Estates cell tower project and a 14.9-metre Bell Mobility radio communication facility proposed for 3135 Lakeshore Rd. W. Backed by the local lobby group Canadians for Safe Technology (C4ST), Bronte residents distributed yers to raise awareness in the community and organized email campaigns directed at public of cials and the federal government. Opponents of the cell towers say they fear Community groups, council pleased with decision to hold the possible health impacts of having these facilities and the electromagnetic radiation they emit so close to area homes. Halton's Chief Medical Of cer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal has said there is no convincing evidence weak radiofrequency signals from cell towers cause adverse health effects. However, he has acknowledged the agreement between Health Canada, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer that additional research is warranted. The Bronte resident campaign led Town council to pass a motion on Aug. 12 to advise the federal government it does not support radio communications facilities within 200 metres of sensitive land uses (e.g. residential), within 20 metres of a heritage structure, within 100 metres of Lake Ontario's shoreline or on lands identi ed as natural heritage or a natural area. The motion, approved unanimously, also asked Ottawa to put a moratorium on the building of cell towers in these areas until a review of Health Canada's Safety Code 6 (which establishes safety limits for human exposure to radiofrequency/electromagnetic energy) has been nalized. DH Westview's decision to put the Bronte Estates cell tower project on hold was well received by C4ST. "I think this is great. It's fantastic to see the owner of the property recognize that there is harm and, quite frankly, be more forward thinking than Health Canada is in his actions," said Frank Clegg, CEO of C4ST. "We're really pleased and we want to thank him for listening to the community." 5 | Friday, August 23, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Clegg said he is hopeful the property owners at 3135 Lakeshore Rd. W., will make a similar decision. Ward 1 Town Councillor Ralph Robinson also praised DH Westview's actions. "It's a very pleasant surprise to see that they are interested in being co-operative. It's great that they are sitting back and waiting to see what happens when that health study is completed," said Robinson. "That is precisely what council asked for in their resolution -- they asked it of the federal government, but obviously these people picked up on it and decided holding off would be a smart thing to do, and it is." Town council has repeatedly stated it does not have the power to approve or block cell tower projects with that authority resting solely with the federal government. Oak-Land Ford adds wind turbine by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Oak-Land Ford Lincoln, located at 570 Trafalgar Rd., increased its commitment to environmental sustainability, recently, by adding a wind turbine to its facility. The turbine, which sits at the top of a 35-foot pole, is part of a pilot project being undertaken by Ford of Canada. According to Ford of cials, Oak-Land is the rst car dealership in Canada to feature the clean energy source. This is not Oak-Land Ford's rst irtation with green energy. Last year, the dealership added a solar sign pylon to its towering brand sign. An electric car charging station was also installed, which the dealership has made available during business hours to anyone who has bought an electric car from them. "We went through a large renovation last year and when we started the renovation we decided we would try to use the most environmentallyfriendly products we could that would t the program requirements of Ford Motor Company," said David Sanci, owner of Oak-Land Ford. "One thing led to another... I was talking with Jerry Foster, he's working on a green energy program for Ford. He mentioned some of the initiatives they were interested in piloting. Two of those were the wind turbine and the solar powered brand sign -- both of which I was very interested in. I thought they would go well with the new building plus it is just the right thing to do." Sanci said the solar panels generate enough electricity to power the lighting on the brand sign. The wind turbine, he said, generates enough electricity to power all of Oak-Land Ford's exterior signage. Sanci said it is too soon to say exactly how much money this green energy is saving the dealership.
