P Tackling expensive post-secondary education funding Dollars & Sense Peter Watson Guest Contributor 13 | Thursday, August 29, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com arenting young children is becoming increasingly more dif cult. Along with providing homework help, you also have to plan how to possibly pay for that expensive post-secondary education. This is the time of year when children begin their annual pilgrimage to the land without parental intervention called university. This is good for the children but nancially dif cult for parents. Parenting takes time and then suddenly that time has passed. You help and nurture so they will blossom and mature. When they eventually do, you cannot believe it happened so quickly. If you think university might be expensive, try leaving the payment for university to the year your child actually enrols. Some families may have two or three children in university at the same time. This is a good time of year to do the arithmetic of assisting your children with postsecondary education. For starters, community college is less expensive. If your child goes to Sheridan College, the annual tuition is less than that for university. Transportation away from Oakville is eliminated if your child lives at home. In a previous column on this subject, we suggested each year away at university could cost $25,000. The total cost is $100,000 for most degrees taking four years to complete. Add in ation of three per cent per year and 18 years from now, your baby will be ready for university at the in ated cost of close to $175,000. Enrolment for three children would cost more than $500,000. Maybe you have children who want two degrees? These add up to some big numbers. Family planning has suddenly taken on a new dimension. see Planning on p.18 Crown jewels at auCtion PUBLIC AUCTION BULLETIN Has the Queen fallen on hard times? Is she liquidating? Too many diamonds; too much gold around the palace? Time to cash in? Not quite. The jewels for sale at auction belong to the crown technically, but they are not exactly from the Queen's vault. As a matter of fact they are more likely to come from an entirely different kind of character. Generally they have been seized by the government from a tax defaulter, from a criminal apprehended for dodgy fraudulent investment schemes, or even from a collection previously belonging to a wealthy contraband dealer. the items are offered at a live public auction, bidders can get them for less than the wholesale price. Seizures have been increasing in the last few years and fewer bidders are attending government auctions, so the deals can be quite excellent; especially with Asset Auctions, Canada's leading government jewellery auctioneer. Anyone interested in beautiful jewellery at amazing prices should plan to attend and take note of the special live public government auction information below.
