Project Safe Start kicks off Monday Halton Regional Police Service will kick off its annual traffic safety initiative, Project Safe Start, on Monday (Sept. 2). The campaign, now in its eighth year, focuses on education, awareness and high-visibility enforcement of traffic laws in and around school zones. This year's campaign, which runs through Sept. 13, covers the first two weeks of the new school year. On Sept. 10, senior officers, divisional commanders and police executive officers will participate in the "All Hands on Deck" component of Project Safe Start. A list of locations where these senior officers will be conducting their specific enforcement efforts will be issued closer to that date. Police will focus on aggressive drivers, speeders, drivers using hand-held devices, and seat-belt compliance. Officers will be reminding motorists to be on alert for increased traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular, in and around school zones, as well as paying attention to crossing guards. Officers, including frontline, district response, high school liaison, education services and senior command will all participate in the campaign. Halton police hope the high-visibility enforcement and education campaign will positively affect driver behaviour throughout the school year and will have lasting overall safety benefits to the community. Traffic has been ranked by Halton residents as their number one policing priority in recent surveys. Police, along with pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, play an integral role in ensuring Halton Region roads are safer, stated a press release. The board's 3,933 teachers, 1,828 nonteaching and support staff and 210 principals and vice-principals are outfitting classrooms, tending to sports fields, polishing floors, cleaning buildings and organizing schedules to help welcome students to another productive and memorable school year. "We are thrilled to embark on another school year in which students will learn in a safe, welcoming environment," said David Euale, director of education. "We appreciate the dedication of teachers, support staff and administrative staff, who have worked hard to ensure their schools and classrooms are ready for the first day of learning. A very special thank you goes out to our custodians and maintenance staff for the special shine they have given our buildings as they await the footprints of students." Two new schools are opening on Tuesday, Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School in Burlington and Irma Coulson Public School in Milton. With the opening of these new schools, the board now boasts 84 elementary and 19 secondary schools. Providing a safe environment for students is a board priority, and during September all elementary schools will be implementing a safe welcome system. The program will provide greater safety in schools by ensuring all visitors use a single point of entry before signing in. Security cameras and buzzer access will be installed at main doors, while other doors will remain locked at all times. Board-funded swipe-access devices, which were approved by trustees earlier this year, will also be installed at selected doors, including those accessed by students and staff in portables.
