Appleby College a `natural fit' for JDRF gala: Baillie by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Friday, August 30, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Appleby College will once again play host to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's (JDRF) Starlight Soirée fundraising gala and the organization's chair says it's the perfect fit. Aubrey Baillie has been chairman of JDRF Canada for the last six years but that's not where his connection to the gala and diabetes ends. The Baillie family's relationship with Appleby College goes back to the 1920s. Aubrey's grandfather, Sir Frank Baillie, bought a property, while living in Toronto, just west of Appleby College, known as Lisonally farm, shortly before he died in 1925. His wife, Lady Baillie, then moved her two daughters and three sons to the Oakville property and sent her boys to Appleby College. "There was Aubrey, whom I'm named after, Frank, my father, and Jim, the youngest... that began the relationship," said Aubrey. "Most of their sons went to Appleby and then most of their sons' sons and daughters went to Appleby. So, there's definitely a long history (between the family and the school)." Lady Baillie would also become a philanthropist, not just for Appleby College but for the Oakville community as well. Presently, only Aubrey's mother, who died in February at the age of 99, and his sister live on the original Lisonally farm property -- the rest of which has since been developed. "So, when the organizers started talking about an Oakville gala and suggested Appleby College (for its inaugural run last year), that was a great fit from my perspective," Aubrey said. "The school does a lot of community-based activities so this was just a natural fit from the point of view of trying to organize an event for Oakville and, No. 2, with my involvement with JDRF ." In addition, to the long history between the Baillies and Appleby College, Aubrey has a personal connection to diabetes as well. His daughter, Julia Osena, learned she has Type 1 diabetes (T1D) when she was 18 -- her diagnosis is one of the reasons why he has been part of JDRF Canada in one form or another since the 1980s. "It's a different challenge when you have a young child, though. We didn't have that challenge," Aubrey explained. "For parents, you have to deal with the reality that you have a young child with a life-threatening disease and then you have to learn to manage that disease on a day-to-day basis and your child is not always on board for all of the pain and discomfort that's involved." More than 300,000 Canadians live with T1D, which can affect both children and adults at any age, and can shorten life expectancy by as much as 15 years. Mismanagement of a person's blood sugar can lead to long term complications and damage to major organs, such as the liver, kidneys, and heart. Those living with T1D must constantly balance their insulin doses -- by ei- Aubrey Baillie ther multiple injections every day or a pump -- with eating and daily activities. Just 30 years ago, the only way to measure the blood sugar level in an individual was through a urine sample, says Aubrey. "Over the last 25 to 30 years, thanks to the money JDRF has raised and invested into research, the ability to manage blood sugar has inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com improved tremendously," he said, citing the creation of the automatic insulin pump and glucose monitors, which can instantly display a person's sugar level and how it's trending. The JDRF's fundraising activities, which include runs, bike rides and galas, raise approximately $25 million a year -- all of which goes towards diabetes research with the hope of one day finding a cure. Canada is also a part of JDRF International, which spends about $140 million a year on T1D research in 40 countries. "The long term solution and goal is to find a cure and help people who have diabetes to live a better life and better manage their disease and research is the key to both of those," said Aubrey. The second annual Starlight Soiree will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7. This year's theme is "Gatsby Magic" and will include cocktails, local restaurant tasting stations, an auction and music from the `Jazz Age' and `Roaring Twenties'.
