"Your partner tells you that it's not really abuse and that you don't know what you're talking about and that this is normal." Krystal, whose full name is being withheld to protect her privacy, said she stayed with her husband as long as she did because she believed he would change. Even so, the university graduate said she began making phone calls to HWP to get advice. She also became a frequent visitor of its website. The charitable organization, which operates women's shelters in Burlington and Milton, provides safe haven, information and education to abused women and their children. "I used their website endlessly. It talked about what domestic violence is, so it was nice to just have that reality check without having to open up to somebody," said Krystal. She also received advice from HWP staff to switch on her phone's record feature when arguments with her husband got especially intense -- she notes doing this may have saved her life. In January 2012, Krystal said she discussed the subject of placing their child in daycare. Despite her husband being a stay-at-home parent, she believed he was not providing the care their child required. Krystal, whose last name is being withheld to protect her privacy, is a survivor of domestic abuse. She says Halton Women's Place helped her get her life back on track. | photo by Hannah Yoon Oakville Beaver GREENWAYS LANDSCAPING "First Impressions Count" 905-464-5789 · Full Lawn Maintenance Service · Sodding, Lawn Renovation · Tree/Shrub Pruning · Spring & Fall Clean Ups · Garden Design - Planting · Topsoil/Mulch · Prompt Personal Service · Quality Workmanship · Free Estimates She said the suggestion sent her husband into a rage. She said he grabbed her, threw her to the ground and wrapped his hands around her throat. Krystal said the attack only stopped because her husband noticed her phone, which she was carrying, was acting strangely (recording). "He grabbed my phone off me and as he was sort of looking down in surprise I ran out of the house," said Krystal. "It was January. I ran down the street in my bare feet, banging on doors until someone let me in and called 911." Krystal said the police came, took the phone from her husband and arrested him. While the danger to her life had been re- moved, many questions remained as to what would happen next. Again Krystal turned to HWP for help. She said she wanted to read and learn about her legal position, but she did not really want to speak to anyone about it. HWP provided her with booklets and answered her questions. "I wanted to understand how the criminal law piece would fit together with whatever would come with the family law piece. It was really helpful to get a sense of the timelines that would be involved and what would and would not be relevant in both cases," said Krystal. see It's on p.5 Rotary Club of Oakville West (RCOW) For several years, three local companies For several years, three companies havehave supported RCOW efforts to raise supported RCOW efforts to raise funds at thefunds at the annual Oakville Midnight annual Oakville Midnight Madness event.Madness event.
