It's a place where people understand, respond to your needs: survivor continued from p.4 "They just sort of took some of the mystery out of it. The police can't give you that information. The lawyers can't really give you that information and without something like the Halton Women's Place you would not have someone to help you through that really confusing first bit." Today, Krystal is separated from her husband. She is waiting for the divorce to be finalized. While she never had an issue with housing, HWP does have the ability to provide six to eight weeks of safe and secure accommodation for women and their dependent children. The organization currently offers 52 beds (22 in Milton and 30 in Burlington). Executive director Diane Beaulieu noted they are at or over capacity 365 days of the year. "One in four women will be abused at some point in her lifetime and that includes women in Halton," said Beaulieu. "Statistics Canada says that half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual abuse since the day they turned 16." HWP also offers confidential counselling, referrals to additional support services and therapeutic programs for children. Recently, the organization has started sending educators into local schools to talk to children about things such as healthy relationships, dating violence and self-esteem. Volunteers also help HWP clients through legal clinics and job-skills training. "All of the women who come to Halton Women's Place have experienced some form of abuse and really the challenge in helping them is getting them to a place where they understand they are not to blame -- that they are a victim," said Beaulieu. "We also want to take the stigmatization of being a victim away from them because they have done nothing wrong." Beaulieu said fundraising events like Hope in High Heels -- which takes place in Burlington on Sept. 28 and Oakville on Sept. 29 -- are essential to allowing HWP to carry on its work and help women and children in need. The event will see groups of men walk in pink high heels to show support for women and children living in and fleeing from abusive situations. Beaulieu said the engagement of men is important as violence against women will not end without their support. Both Hope in High Heels events begin at 10 a.m. with the Burlington walk taking place at Emma's Back Porch, 2084 Old Lakeshore Rd., and the Oakville walk beginning at Centennial Square, 120 Lakeshore Rd. "It's really, really important women have a place to turn and go to when they feel like there is nowhere else to go. "Whether that is physically having a place to go or resources to turn to or someone to talk to on the phone, Halton Women's Place is one of the few places you can reach out to for information without any fear of it coming back to you or being misunderstood or anything like that," said Krystal. "It is a place where people understand and they are always there to respond to your need."
