Focus is on success for indie filmmaker, musician Tullo working on follow up to A Secret Cross by Scott Stewart Oakville Beaver Staff Artscene 75 | Friday, August 30, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "Connected to your Community" Anthony Tullo is riding an unparalleled wave of success. The actor/singer recently earned accolades in both of his fields of excellence. "Last year, I made a feature film called A Secret Cross," Tullo said. "It won the International Award of Excellence in Los Angeles, it won Best Supporting Actor at the L.A. Movie Awards and the best feature award at the Moving Images Festival in Toronto. "I wrote it, produced it, was lead actor, I was everything." Tullo recently received word that his film will soon reach a much larger audience. "I picked up a distribution deal," he said. "It's really hard to (do) in these times without a star name in your picture. If you do get one, you're likely lose all your rights and you'd be lucky if it ever made it out there. "I decided to go DIY and do the social media distribution," said Tullo. "I knew of a lady named Linda Nelson, who's very good and very picky. I sent her my movie and she emailed me after watching about 10 films in a weekend and said my film was interesting and she decided to go with (it)." Nelson is one half of Nelson Madison Films, with partner Michael Madison. The pair focus their efforts and attentions on independent films. "She cut me a deal that I could never have gotten with a regular distributor," Tullo said. "She's going to get the film distributed through Amazon and a lot of other places. I'm very excited about this." Tullo isn't one to rest on his laurels, as he's already started working on his next film. "I'm starting another movie in May called Zachariah," he said. "I had a conversation with Linda and she said, `If you're going to do another movie without a name (actor), which isn't going to happen until you become one yourself, try to do a well-made thrillerhorror, because they sell like crazy." Tullo added he isn't into gratuitous violence, saying "there's got to be a reason for it." The next film, which will be largely shot in Oakville, already has a distribution home. "I was talking to Linda and asked her if she'd take a look at my second film," he said. "She said, `I think Michael and I will distribute your second film. If you make a film of the same quality as A Secret Cross, we'll distribute your film.'" Faith Tullo, naturally, was blown away by Nelson's response. "I was just hoping she'd look at it," he said. "This shows she has a lot of faith in me. "Linda is very picky but very fair. She wants to help filmmakers who are up and coming who can't get into a big distribution company." Each year the Town of Oakville makes operating and project grants available to qualified not-for-profit cultural organizations. The Oakville Arts Council administers the cultural grant program. Applications are reviewed by an arm's length Grants Review Committee, convened by the Oakville Arts Council.
