Golfer sixth at senior men's championship Local resident Larry Cooper finished tied for sixth at the Canadian Men's Senior Championship golf tournament that concluded Friday at The Briars Golf Club in Sutton West, Ont. Oakville's minor peewee AA squad clinched the title with a 5-2 victory over Vaughan in the final. Grayden Stauffer pitched a complete game to earn championship game MVP honours, and the A's scored three runs in the top of the seventh and final inning to break a 2-2 deadlock. Oakville also got a strong effort from its starting pitcher in the semifinal. Ryan Matsuba was named game MVP after going 6 2/3 innings in an 8-2 rout of Chatham. The A's outscored their opponents 52-24 in their five games at provincials, which also featured teams from Chatham, Vaughan, Barrie, Hamilton, Toronto, Guelph, Clarington, Kitchener, St. Catharines, London and Oshawa. Oakville finished the campaign with an overall record of 4311. Coaches attributed the team's success to contributions from every player on the roster, exceptional pitching and defence, and a relentless offence. Other members of the team are Jonathan Bodner, Chris Vernon, Ross Peaker, Joe Kruse, Riley Keenan, Zachary Marriott, Cameron Berczi and Josh Wood. Kevin Kruse is the team`s head coach, with Sean Marriott, Peter Berczi, Joshua Cipolla and Ryan Wood rounding out the staff. Earlier in the tournament, Oakville beat Topham Park 12-2, Sydenham 10-4 and Whitby 12-9 in round-robin play, clubbed Martingrove 13-2 in the quarter-finals and downed Erindale 14-10 in the semifinals.
