www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 6, 2013 | 8 This Magic Moment for the moment that should never happen by Ian Holroyd Metroland West Media A musical trip down memory lane promises to support those who serve and protect our community every day. This Magic Moment, an all-day, 1960s-themed music festival will support Halton Heroes. In the event a Halton Police Service member is killed or injured in the line of duty, Halton Heroes is an organization dedicated to providing support for the families. Co-hosted by former local news anchor Connie Smith and Robbie Lane from Robbie Lane and the Disciples and AM740, the concert will feature such musical acts as The Drifters, The Contours, Robbie Lane and the Disciples, local group Night Brigade and Halton's own "singing cop" Stuart MacDonald. Paired with the musical entertainment, there will also be a classic car show on site, where the Canadian International Auto Show will exhibit 25 of its award-winning cars from the '60s, alongside vehicles from the Mustang Club and Studebaker Club. "We believe in our Halton Heroes," said Smith. "We believe in supporting them as they put their lives on the line for us each and every day. We're all about good news and we're all about good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll." Giving back to the community Scott Robinson, co-chair of the event's organizing committee, said This Magic Moment will not only be fun for the whole family, but it will also give back to the community. "It's the perfect combination," he said. According to Robinson, the committee chose '60s music because it's accessible to everyone, adding, "It's fun, it's light, it's a music that everybody gets up to dance to. The '60s, it's nostalgia." This Magic Moment will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 in Burlington's Nelson Park, 4181 New St. Keith Strong, Halton Heroes founder, said if an officer is killed in the line of duty, there is a four- to eight-week period before benefits are paid to the family. No police officer has been killed while on duty in Halton since regional amalgamation of municipal forces in 1974. Halton police did not have readily available statistics on the number of officers seriously injured while on duty that required significant time off work. Halton Heroes is striving to raise $2 million over the next 10 years for an endowment with the Burlington Community Foundation that will bridge that gap in income. "Our goal is to sit down with (surviving family members) within the first 12-18 hours and say, `What are your needs?' And we'll cut them a cheque to pay for the mortgages, to pay for whatever they think they need covered," said Strong. Gala raised $141K last year Last year, the Halton Heroes annual gala raised more than $141,000 towards its goal. Tickets to This Magic Moment cost $30 plus HST and handling, and can be ordered online at www. thismagicmoment.ca, as well as participating locations. The first 750 people to arrive will receive a $10 gift card to Baton Rouge Restaurants. The Prelude to the Magic, a VIP soirée and champagne reception is on Friday, Sept. 13, at Burlington's Waterfront Hotel, 2020 Lakeshore Rd., featuring an exclusive performance by The Drifters. Tickets cost $150 and include hors d'oeuvres, The Drifters latest CD, a picture taken with The Drifters and a complimentary ticket to Saturday's all-day concert. The dress code is elegant and formal attire. Halton police officer Stuart MacDonald entertains at a media preview for the Sept. 14 This Magic Moment fundraiser concert in support of Halton Heroes.
