www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 6, 2013 | 14 Take Back the Night march against violence against women Sept. 18 The 23rd annual Halton Take Back the Night (TBTN) event will be Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the L.G. Branch Auditorium at Mainway Arena in Burlington. The inaugural Take Back the Night event took place in Europe in the 1970s and was a series of murders and sexual assaults involving women. Events are now held around the globe. "Halton's TBTN provides a space to challenge violence and create a safer community by empowering women and educating male allies", TBTN co-chair Carolyn Cameron said. "The event is a powerful opportunity for our community to speak out against violence." More than one-third of Canadian women have reported experiencing at least one instance of sexual assault since the age of 16, according to Statistics Canada (2006). Halton Region has the distinction of being both safest regional municipality and the safest place to live in the Greater Toronto Area. In 2012, 142 sexual assaults were reported to police. However, the actual number of assaults remains unknown as most go unreported. The free event will feature addresses from survivors of sexual assault from Halton, the Naked BEat Drum Circle, a spoken-word performance by Shannon Kitchings, and the barbershop quartet, Lavish. Finally, there will be an anti-violence march for women, children and transgendered people, with a solidarity event chaired by the Male Ally Network (M.A.N.). TBTN is hosted by 13 community partners and members including the Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services of Halton (SAVIS), Halton ADAPT, The AIDS Network, Halton Community Legal Services, Halton District School Board, Halton Regional Police Services, Halton Women's Place, Nina's Place and Sheridan College, among others. For information, contact SAVIS at (905) 825-3622 or savis@savisofhalton.org.
