continued from p.1 ation at the home at 16574 Steeles Ave., just west of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Tenth Line near Milton, by an anonymous tip and began transferring the 115 cats from the home to its shelter. Ten dead cats were also removed. "In a removal of this type there are many places a fearful cat may hide. Our officers are monitoring the traps throughout the day and we have removed additional cats from the house. However, we know there are still others that need to be captured and are working hard to capture them as carefully as possible and bring them back to the shelter," Dushko said. "We are making sure there is food, water and clean litter at the home for these cats." The humane trap inside the single-family home is a cage with food and a door that closes behind the cat as the animal goes inside. Before the removal, OMHS already had 290 cats in its care, which include at the shelter, litters of kittens in foster homes, and cats receiving care at local veterinary clinics. OMHS has rented a trailer temporarily to accommodate its new guests after obtaining a second search warrant to continue removing the cats from the house Saturday morning. A time limit for the first warrant expired Friday night. "The addition of 100-plus cats, all of them in need of some form of treatment, puts a huge strain on all our resources -- one we are happy to bear because it means that these cats will get the help and care they need," said Dushko. Rescue operation continued early this week Those interested in fostering can contact Heather White, OMHS manager of community outreach and education, by emailing heatherw@ omhs.ca. People can also make a donation to help in the cats' care by visiting www.omhs.ca and indicating `cat rescue' in the notes section on the online donation page -- 100 per cent of the donation will be used to help the rescued cats. There is also a wish list online for donations, which includes: · small cardboard box bottoms to be used as disposable litter pans · recycled paper-based cat litter · canned cat food · small-sized paper cups used in fecal tests for parasites · Popsicle sticks -- also used in testing · newspapers · ping pong balls as cat toys Dushko notes, the shelter does not currently need towels or blankets. Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) agent Laura Mackasey is investigating. Charges are anticipated once the rescue effort is completed, says Dushko. "We will only be able to lay charges in the case once we are absolutely certain we have removed every cat from the home and are getting each one the care they need," she said. -- with files from the Toronto Star and Milton Canadian Champion For a related story, see p.8 3 | Wednesday, September 11, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) animal care technician Jake Edwards cares for a cat that was among the more than 100 felines rescued from a north Halton single-family home last week. Dushko noted OMHS initially rented the temporary trailer to house the cats, but has since realized it will need a larger, more expensive one. The shelter has made arrangements to have the large temporary trailer dropped off at its Cornwall Road location to transfer all the cats into one location. "The cats that are part of the investigation will stay at the shelter, but we could really use fostering help for some of the cats (already) in our shelter, which would lessen the strain on our animal care staff as we cope with the large number of additional cats that need our care," Dushko said.
