St. Mildred's is hosting HSH's Empty Bowls event on Oct. 20 7 | Wednesday, September 11, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com O n Sunday, Oct. 20 from noon-3 p.m., St. Mildred'sLightbourn School (SMLS) will host Home Suite Hope's (HSH) seventh annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. This event, which raises funds for local single-parent families facing homelessness, could not exist without the tremendous support of community partners such as SMLS. This is the third year SMLS is host sponsor of the Empty Bowls event -- an event that brings together more than 700 guests, 100plus volunteers and 18 local restaurants and caterers to serve up delicious soups. Dorothy Byers, SMLS head of school, and Nicki Newhouse, director of student life, are both on the HSH Empty Bowls Committee. Under Byers' leadership, the entire SMLS community has embraced Home Suite Hope and Empty Bowls: SMLS teachers, students and parents volunteer at the event; the SMLS board of governors is a soup-provider for the event; and issues about suburban homelessness are woven into the curriculum so that students become more aware of this growing Canadian problem. Guests at this year's Empty Bowls will see student artwork about homelessness displayed throughout the school while student "buskers" entertain throughout the hallways. Janice Moro, executive director of HSH, calls the partnership with SMLS, "a truly amazing community collaboration." Tickets for Empty Bowls are on sale now and are available by visiting www.homesuitehope.org. -- Submitted by Janice Moro, on behalf of Empty Bowls, Home Suite Hope
