"The support of local businesses, service clubs and families is so important to the Oakville community and to the success of the Terry Fox Run," said Pam Damoff, run chair. Fox was just 18 years old when he was forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres above the knee in 1977. The B.C. native started his run in St. John's, Newfoundland April 12, 1980 with little fanfare, according to the Terry Fox Foundation website. Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran close to 42 kilometres a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario. However, on Sept., 1, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres, Fox was forced to stop outside Thunder Bay, Ont. because cancer had appeared in his lungs. 3 | Friday, September 13, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 23 Artscene Classified 20 28 Holland Park Garden, Pizza Depot, Hooper's Pharmacy, Marketplace, New Homes, Raffi Jewellers, 2001 Audio Video, Smart Source, QSI Windows & Doors, Michael's *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com APPRECIATE THE CRISP FALL AIR OF SOPHISTICATION.
