www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, September 18, 2013 | 12 Fall Registration (NC)--Various tax credits and exemptions are available to students across the province, all of which have been developed to help ease the financial crunch, both in and out of the classroom. Here are some tips to help you save and make each dollar count: A snapshot of tax credits that can save students money Savings in the classroom: · Full-time students can claim a federal credit of 15 per cent of their eligible tuition fees, plus an education credit of 15 per cent of $400 per month, or $60 in 2012. In fact, the equivalent Ontario provincial credit is indexed so students can claim a monthly credit of up to 5.05 per cent of $506, or $26. · Even part-time students may claim the 15 per cent tuition fee and deduct $120 a month towards the 15 per cent federal education tax credit. This works out to be approximately $18 and $151 per month toward the 5.05 per cent Ontario provincial education tax credit, which equals $8. · There is also a tax credit for students who choose to pursue a career-related designation or accreditation. · Be sure to claim your textbook expenses with the federal textbook tax credit of 15 per cent of $65 or $10. This covers each month you are eligible to receive the full-time education tax credit. If you are eligible for the part-time education tax credit, you are eligible for 15 per cent of $20, or $3. · Any scholarship, fellowship or bursary income you receive that entitles you to claim an education tax credit cannot be taxed. Savings outside the classroom: · If you're a transit user, you can claim a non-refundable tax credit save your passes and receipts. · Something else to consider, if you relocate at least 40 kilometers within Canada to work after graduation, you may claim moving expenses against the income you earned in the year you moved. These expenses include travel, storage and temporary housing costs. · Parents who spend at least 12 hours a month studying in an educational program lasting at least three consecutive weeks at a high school, college, university or other designated educational institution, may be eligible to claim child expenses while they or their spouse/common-law partner attend school. · Low-income students may be eligible for the HST credit and can apply for the HST rebate at tax time. Be sure to file an income tax return even if you don't earn enough money to pay because 18 per cent of the income you earned is eligible to go towards an RRSP . You don't have to deduct an RRSP contribution in the year it is made. It can be carried forward for a later deduction period when you have the income to offset a RRSP contribution.
