Blood donor clinics honouring childhood victims of cancer Everyone is asked to roll up their sleeves to help some of cancer's youngest victims. In recognition of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, blood donor clinics are being held to honour childhood cancer survivors and to remember children who have lost their lives to the disease. One clinic, which will take place Thursday, Sept. 26, at Queen Elizabeth Park Community Centre, 2302 Bridge Rd., is being held in honour of four-year-old Savannah Herbert. On Aug. 22, 2012, Savannah was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, an aggressive and malignant tumour that develops from nerve tissue. Her treatment, which is ongoing, has to date required her to receive about 100 blood transfusions. S a v a n n a h 's clinic is open from 2-8 p.m. Each year in Canada, 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer. A Gold Ribbon campaign taking place this year seeks to collect 1,700 blood donations across Ontario -- representing one for every child affected.
