Global manufacturing model secures 2,800 jobs continued from p.1 "This is not a cost to government, this is an investment in the future," said Ontario's premier. "This is an investment in innovation that will make production more efficient and allow Ford to quickly respond to changing consumer demand, which we know is a reality of modern manufacturing." Wynne said she believed the investments would set Ford up for years of future success in Ontario and secure the jobs of Oakville Assembly's more than 2,800 employees. The premier said investing in this type of advanced manufacturing is exactly what needs to be done to keep Ontario's economy growing. Canada's Minister of Industry James Moore announced the federal government's contribution and spoke about Oakville Assembly's future. "Ford's project Northern Star is part of a 10year, $1.1 billion project to transform this facility into one of the most sophisticated in the entire world," he said. "It will expand Ford's research and development and ensure work is done right here in Oakville by Canadians. It will also ensure this plant has the ability to continue to produce high-quality, fuel-efficient and smart-designed vehicles; like the newly redesigned Ford Edge, the Ford Flex, the MKX, the MKT; and to continue to export these products around the world." Moore said Ford has come a long way since the darkest period of the economic downturn calling this an impressive time, which Ford got to through its workers, its sales team, and its leadership. Ford Motor Company's President of the Americas Joe Hinrichs said that when retooling of the Oakville Ford Assembly Plant is complete, Ford would bring several new global models to the plant for the first time to help meet demand -- not just in North America, but around the world. It was pointed out the investment would benefit more people than the Oakville Assembly Plant employees since it is estimated every auto job generates up to 10 supporting jobs. Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited President and CEO Dianne Craig also weighed in on the investment announcement. "Ford's investment demonstrates Canada can be competitive in the global market through strategic partnerships," she said. "Working closely with the government and labour, we have secured a bright future for employees at Oakville Assembly." Ford has now invested more than $2 billion in Canada in less than a decade. Hinrichs said Ford's investment would mean its spending on Canadian-made auto parts would increase by approximately $200 million, to a total of nearly $4 billion annually. Work on the transformation at Oakville Assembly is already underway and is expected to be complete by fall 2014. "This is an incredible year for Oakville Assembly," said Will Cowell, plant manager, Oakville Assembly. "We are celebrating the plant's 60th anniversary and we passed the one-million mark in Ford Edge production. We look forward to continuing to celebrate many more milestones and to building quality vehicles with passion and excellence for years to come." 3 | Friday, September 20, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Regional Municipality of Halton Special Waste Drop-off Days To make the recycling of household hazardous waste and electronic waste more convenient for residents, Halton Region holds Special Waste Drop-off Days throughout the year.
