www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 20, 2013 | 4 No half measures for marathoner committed to cats by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff The Oakville Half Marathon Sunday will be the cat's meow for one local resident. Describing running as simply part of his life, Andrew Shannon is taking part in this weekend's Nutrience Half Marathon at Coronation Park and is privately fundraising to help the more than 100 cats recently rescued from a Halton Hills single-family home and brought to Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS). As seen on CityLine and HGTV The kicker? The 50-year-old is doing it all dressed as a cat to help garner more awareness for the cause and help the local shelter -- OMHS had close to 300 cats already in its care prior to the rescue. "I want to run for the OMHS because they have an immediate, unplanned and urgent need to save the more than 100 cats," Shannon said. "Running as a cat, hopefully, will increase awareness, motivate and inspire people to help." When Shannon and his wife Marion first heard of the rescue, they both decided they needed to do something. "Pets have always been an important part of my life and they have given so much to me and now I want to give back," said Shannon. "We have two rescue cats ourselves that bring our family lots of joy... we always make sure to rather adopt a cat from a shelter than buying it elsewhere." Having run in more than 50 half-marathons so far in his lifetime, Shannon decided on a spur of the moment he would take part in the upcoming race and fundraise for the cause -- Marion suggested he do it dressed as a cat. "I laughed out loud when Marion proposed the idea but if that's what it takes to gain awareness, I will put my pride aside," he said. "It all started out as what we as a family can do and we are very amazed on how many people got involved and got behind (it) to support us in the endeavour." see Honouring on p.5 RE-USE, RECYCLE AND REFURBISH your indoor/outdoor metal, wicker and wood furniture, doors, cupboards and collectibles.
