This goes hand-in-hand with overkill and it's running rampant throughout minor hockey. Take the parents: there are associations out there who have banned parents from the rink because their behavior is so fanatical and abhorrent. Then there are the coaches, many of whom are saints for surrendering their time for the betterment of the kids and the sport. But, then there are those overeager to make their mark -- guys who believe coaching this team of eight-year-olds is but a step to becoming an National Hockey League (NHL) coach. Their coaching methods include berating and belittling, and their goal is not to have fun, but to win. At any cost. Even if that means stapling less-talented players to the bench. You know, the odds against a minor-league coach -- or player, for that matter -- making the NHL are infinitesimal. You have better odds of getting hit by lightning while picking up your lottery winnings. But the odds of kids falling in love with hockey and playing the game for the rest of their lives -- for fitness, health and pure pleasure -- are huge.
