Mom, dad believe son can recover from brain injury continued from p.1 This has been Torres' life since July 20. The night before that fateful day, Perez said Torres had been out with friends prior to returning home shortly after midnight. "I was already in bed, but my husband saw him. He said he was OK, he didn't look drunk or anything," said Perez. "They chatted a little bit and then he ate some salad left over from dinner and went to bed." At around 6 a.m., Perez awoke to strange noises coming from her son's room. When she went to investigate, she discovered Torres facedown on the ground with a puddle of vomit and blood near his face. The sound she heard was her son gasping for air -- struggling to breathe. Perez said she performed CPR while her daughter called 911. Paramedics arrived minutes later and rushed Torres to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital where he was placed on life support. It remains unclear what caused the crisis, said the mother. Perez said the doctors held out little hope for her son's recovery telling her Torres had sustained an extensive brain injury due to oxygen deprivation. At one point, it was recommended Torres be taken off life support. Perez said there are a variety of treatments and therapies that could possibly help Torres awaken from the condition he is in. However, those options are not covered by Health Canada, which is why the family is appealing to the community for help. "What I have realized is that our system is not prepared to deal with this type of injury. What they want is to just wait for the brain to heal itself," she said. "This is very different from what you find in the U.S. or other countries where they have a protocol." The family is trying to raise $25,000 so Torres can explore a number of treatment options, including possibly attending a private clinic in New Jersey for three months. see Family on p.10 5 | Friday, September 27, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Shhhh... Juan Torres "He's our son. For me, that wasn't even an option," said Perez. "I felt there was a chance, there was something." Perez said her faith was rewarded a week later when her son began breathing on his own. Perez believes Torres has shown that he is aware of visitors and reacts to what is asked of him. In one video, Torres raises a finger after being told by his mother to do so. Oakville's Best Kept Secret.
