Oakville's Evangel Pentecostal Church will reflect on 50 years this month by giving back to the community. On Saturday (Oct. 5), the local chapel will host a free community carnival from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at 1450 Rebecca St. It will offer bouncy castles and slides, games, pony rides, glitter tattoos and free food and drinks to the first 500 people. "We're here to invest in our community. I like to see people giving back to the community because the message of Evangel church is not just a verbal message. I want our message to (promote) how we live," said Rev. Shannon Potter, a senior pastor since 2005. The church was established in January 1963 by pastors Rae and Eileen Stewart, who spent 26 years ministering at Evangel. Prior to its launch, a small group of families met regu- larly in a home, hoping that a pastor would start a Pentecostal church in Oakville, Potter explained. "Every time (Rae) would come to this area, he would say, `some day I'm going to plant a church in Oakville.' The timing just came together for him to do that and he joined the small group of people," said Potter. Congregation numbers totalled 87 -- with 32 in Sunday school, 32 at morning service and 23 at evening service. The numbers have now reached close to 400 for Sunday service and 80-100 in the children's Sunday school. Evangel added two congregations -- Philadelphia and Hillspring. The former is for its 60 Spanish-speaking members. "We had a number of Spanish people coming to our church. A lot of Spanish speaking-families were moving to Oakville," said Potter. "We had a pastor who was Spanish-speaking, so we began with a Bible study and it grew." For example, Evangel once held a regular Sunday night service. "(With) people commuting in the GTA, Sunday morning is basically the (only) time that people are going to come for service. Services are much more contemporary now than they were then," said Potter. "They were traditional and more hymns-based, whereas now, it is more of a contemporary worship style." He also noted people used to dress up to attend church, whereas people now tend to be a "little more casual." "Evangels has always been a church that has adapted," said Potter. Saturday's carnival is one of three anniversary celebrations this fall. "The first thing we wanted to focus on was the fact we've been a part of this community for 50 years. It's an honour for Evangel to be in Oakville and to be a part of the community. We wanted to give something (back)," said Potter. An Oct. 20 event will recognize Evangel's position in the top 100 mission-giving churches as part of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada,. "We support a lot of work overseas in a lot of different areas -- human trafficking, feeding programs, education, rape crisis centres, medical (programs) and orphanages," said Potter. "We invest significantly in people who are working in other countries to touch the lives of people there." The third celebration, on Nov. 17, will honour the church's history. "We're honouring the Stewart family because a couple of their sons served here in support roles as pastors through the years," said Potter. "We've been given a lot (over) the years through the sacrifice of people, so we want to give back to others." Potter said going forward, the chapel wants to make youths a greater priority by giving them more visibility in the congregation. He noted the church's other longterm goal is to become an integral part of the community as a "significant contributor and partner." "If Evangel were to disappear, would anybody notice? We want to be connected in the community. We're going to continue to put a strong emphasis on helping people come to faith, to grow in their faith and to be a part of a community that cares about them.
