Sean Kohler scored 2:55 into the extra period to complete a late rally by the Blades. Oakville forced OT with Daniel Robertson's equalizer that came with 1:17 to go in the third period. Loyola's first senior football loss a painful one In their first major test of the high school senior football season, the Loyola Hawks passed the first 46 minutes with flying colours. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the final two minutes were a different story. The Nelson Lords scored two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter to stun the Hawks 30-24 Friday in Burlington, handing Loyola its first loss of the Tier 1 campaign. The Hawks led 24-16 with less than two minutes remaining before Nelson blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the end zone for a major, pulling within two points after a failed twopoint conversion. The Lords then recovered an onside kick and scored two plays later, adding a two-point conversion to take the six-point lead. Loyola was unable to score on its final possession. A gut-wrenching loss for the Hawks, to be sure, but Loyola players and coaches could also take positives out of how competitive they were with a Lords program that has won eight Halton Tier 1 titles since 1995 and claimed the Golden Horseshoe Bowl crown two years ago. "Yes, it was tough, but a good learning experience for our young kids. In Canadian football, a lot can happen (with) a minute and 40 seconds remaining," said Hawks coach Dan O'Hara. "It was an exciting game for a spectator, I'm sure... Nelson is a good program. They know how to stay poised. Hats off to them for grinding it out." Darryl Jean, Brett Colangelo and O.J. Ofulue scored touchdowns for the Hawks (3-1). Loyola might have held on for the victory had it not had two touchdowns called back by penalty or dropped a pass at the Nelson one-yard line. The Hawks will face another tough challenge tomorrow (Thursday), when they host the Corpus Christi Longhorns for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. In other action Friday, the Holy Trinity Titans defeated the Assumption Crusaders 23-17 to pull into a four-way tie for the Tier 1 division lead with Loyola, Nelson and Corpus Christi. Nathan Rourke threw two TD passes to Nigel Goodridge and another to Will Ellis. Sean Wolczyk added two converts and a field goal for Trinity, which will visit M.M. Robinson tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Senior Tier 2 In senior Tier 2 play, the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers and T.A. Blakelock Tigers each carry 3-0 records into today's (Wednesday's action). Ridge maintained its perfect record with a 24-0 win at the Abbey Park Eagles last week, while Blakelock stayed undefeated with a 40-14 victory at Bishop Reding. The Trailblazers are home to the 1-2 St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders today (noon kickoff) for the annual Partners In Pink game in support of breast cancer research and awareness. Blakelock hosts the White Oaks Wildcats at 2:30 p.m. In other Tier 2 action today, Abbey Park (0-3) visits Georgetown and the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils (2-1) entertain Reding. Both games are slated for 2:30 p.m. starts. Junior update Burlington schools are dominating Halton junior Tier 1, with Nelson, Assumption, Notre Dame and Corpus Christi combining to go 10-2 over the first three weeks. Loyola (1-2) and Holy Trinity (0-3) are the only Oakville schools in the league. Ridge, OT and Blakelock are all 3-0 in junior Tier 2. The Blades (5-3-0) visit the Stouffville Spirit tomorrow (Thursday) before hosting the Trenton Golden Hawks Friday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Friday's contest begins at 7:30 p.m. Hornets open PWHL season with loss, tie Call-up netminder Nikki Cece stopped 32 of 33 shots and Jazz Kennedy scored the tying goal in the third period as the Oakville Hornets earned a 1-1 draw with the Stoney Creek Sabres Saturday in Provincial Women's Hockey League play.
