www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 10, 2013 | 18 I That special quality of life requires dollars and responsible nancial planning Dollars & Sense Peter Watson Guest Contributor t is surprising to see how many people ignore their investments as if it is some foreign entity that is best forgotten. Ignoring the dollars of current day is, for some, a badge of honour in their personal statement because their focus is on the quality of life and not the materialist world of capitalism and investment management. But your quality of life and that mysterious world of nance are more closely connected than you realize. I hear people talk indirectly about money all the time. Their vocabulary is not nancial but if you translate what they are saying it is indeed about nancial issues. People talk about what interests them. For example, when they retire they want to do something entirely different from what they do today. Change their life, travel, explore and experience something unique and different. The broad and varied visions of how people see their lives unfold in the future is truly amazing. Listening to them talk about how they have planned to achieve their dreams is equally so. The same people who have not paid much attention to the details of personal nance have suddenly become absolutely immersed in the details of their life ahead of them. How they will accomplish their dreams is amazingly creative. At what age can they afford to retire? Can they house swap with someone in a foreign land? Should they rent their house and just pack up and go and use the rental income to nance new adventures? The magic of modern day personal nance is to apply that same mental focus about ambitious life plans to nancial circumstances. Be the person in charge of your nancial future. Employ the services of an investment adviser but oversee that relationship and determine if it is usehuge discounts for wholesale accounts!! ful in achieving your desired outcome. Manage your spending and only spend when it is prudent. Implement a savings plan if some of your priorities are scheduled for the future. Set a goal to eliminate spending when it is truly not adding value and enjoyment to your life. Is it prudent to incur the expense of renting your water heater versus owning it? Can lower cost alternatives replace a fully-loaded cable TV package? Avoid the made-in-Canada fees that are some of the most expensive in the world. We encourage you to pay attention to your personal nances, so your dreams can become a reality. -- Submitted by Peter Watson, MBA, CFP , R.F .P ., CIM, FCSI., Certified Financial Planner AP PLE BY LIN E vE ST Rd Give Them An Experience That Lasts A Lifetime!
