(DRI) is hoping its fourth annual fundraising event is more successful than ever so it can continue rescuing dogs in need. The Tails in Town fundraiser is set for Sunday, Oct. 20 at the leash-free Palermo Park, 2345 Dundas St. W. Founded by Joan Znidarec and Mano Krueger, the local non-profit organization is run by a group of volunteers who rescue and re-home all breeds of dogs. "This year's event needs to be a success more than ever," explained Znidarec. "We are in desperate need of funds as we are still carrying some debt from last year." All canines that come into DRI's care are given behavioural and medical assessments, and receive necessary veterinary care, which can range from annual care to costly surgeries -- all of the dogs are also vaccinated, de-wormed, micro-chipped and spayed or neutered while in the organization's program. The cost of the medical care and basic supplies is funded by adoption fees, as well as donations made to the organization. "For us to continue to save the high volume of dogs we do, we need the community's support," said Znidarec. "We are blessed to work with some wonderful local vets who do so much to help us, however, we still have bills to pay and our medical expenses add up quickly." DRI rescues more than 100 abused, neglected and unwanted dogs every year. In addition, its long-standing relationships with humane societies and animal controls throughout Ontario help relieve overcrowding or situations where there is a lack of resources. The theme to the free, family- and dog-friendly fundraiser is Pumpkin Patch Party and BBQ and the event runs 11 a.m.-3 p.m. It will include a pumpkin sale, barbecue with Oakville's firefighters, dog demonstrations, costume contest for children and canines, hot apple cider, and face and gourd painting -- as well as $5 dog nail trims, canine massage therapy, ask a vet/trainer stations, and canine CPR demonstrations.
