The holiday-themed, non-competitive walk and run will raise money for the Arthritis Society Halton Peel Region. Although the event is new to Oakville and Ontario, it has launched the holiday season in communities across Canada for nearly 20 years. "(Oakville) just seemed like a great place to do it... we're certainly seeing a great response from the community, so far," said Lorna Catrambone, manager of community development for the local Arthritis Society chapter. The project, which ran from Sept. 17-Oct. 5 in Oakville, was a street-level enforcement campaign aimed at reducing thefts from vehicles and its associated crimes, such as drug use and the sale of stolen property. The initiative was run by the Oakville Strategic Support Team with the District Response Unit and uniform patrol of cers. Project Hopper saw of cers conduct covert as well as high-visibility enforcement in select areas. The police were also involved in community education and awareness about this type of theft, said Sgt. Dave Cross in a news release on the project's conclusion. In all, 22 arrests were made and 35 criminal charges laid. An additional 125 Provincial Offence Notices were issued. Several stolen items were recovered and returned to their rightful owners, said the release. During the blitz, there was a 59 per cent reduction in thefts from vehicles in Oakville compared to the same time period last year.
