education Embracing the learning needs of a tech savvy generation Rotherglen introduces a 1:1 iPad program for intermediate students Rotherglen School introduced a new iPad 1:1 pilot program at the beginning of the school year that equips all Grade 7 and 8 students at the Oakville elementary campus with their own iPads. The introduction of the iPad to the existing program is meant to enhance student learning and support classroom instruction. The cost of student iPads is included in the Grade 7 and 8 tuition fees. Student iPads Students make use of their iPads both in the classroom and for their homework. The iPad provides a useful tool for students to complete their notes and assignments, communicate with their teachers, carry out research and organize due dates for assignments and assessments. Rotherglen plans to begin the 1:1 iPad program with their intermediate students and expand the program to additional grades in future years. Incorporating leading technology into the learning process is not something new to Rotherglen School. True to its core values and vision, Rotherglen has had a long-standing commitment to incorporating appropriate technology into instructional approaches and classroom learning. Ongoing investments Signi cant and ongoing investments have been made in SmartBoard technology, iPads and Mac labs to equip students and staff with 21st century learning and teaching tools. Students in primary classrooms currently have access to iPads and are using their devices to strengthen reading and mathematics skills. A class set of iPads and laptops are also available for sign out for students in Grades 4 to 6 to complement their classroom studies. "We are very pleased with the launch of our 1:1 iPad program for our intermediate students. Our students quickly adapted to using their devices to support and enhance their learning in the classroom. Introducing iPads into our programming was a natural progression in the use of technology at the school," says Patrick Lanigan, assistant head of school. "The school has enlisted the support of an iPad specialist to work with teachers on a weekly basis to support the integration of iPads into the existing programming. This is all part of our commitment to integrating technology into the classroom," explains Lanigan. "Rotherglen School is dedicated to meeting the needs of learners through the use of technology to support the curriculum while providing students with stimulating and interactive learning tools that enhance learning," says Lanigan.
