Loyola making fourth straight trip to OFSAA cross-country continued from p.22 nucleosis in the summer. Now Guay is looking to improve upon on a career-best 10th-place finish. "You always want to finish better than you have before but as long as I have my best race, I'll be happy," she said. Meanwhile, Loyola has its own streak going, qualifying for OFSAA for the fourth straight year after winning the senior girls' division by placing five runners in the top 15. Joining O'Neill and Ratcliffe at OFSAA are Sarah Nixon (12th), Victoria Gregatti (14th) and Isabella Borea (15th). Loyola's midget girls' team also won its division with a dominating performance. The Hawks had five of the top nine finishers -- led by GHAC champ Megan Nixon -- despite moving two midget-aged runners up to junior. Though she had success in track and field in elementary school, Nixon credits the training in another sport for building strength in her legs. "I've been doing gymnastics for the past 10 years so it built a lot of strength in my legs," the 14-year-old said. Joining her at OFSAA will be Sophia Borea (third), Victoria Corbett (fourth), Andrea Wallin (sixth) and Danielle Lysak (ninth). "We have a strong team," said Nixon, who now puts her running skills to use for Saltfleet of the Ontario Youth Soccer League. "It's great. We push each other to do our best." That includes Rachel Marmen and Kristina Ward, who joined the junior ranks to help Loyola qualify for OFSAA. "They were a little nervous about moving up, but I was convinced they could do it," said Loyola coach Barb Celestini. And they did. Marmen finished 20th while Ward was 31st, helping Loyola claim the second team spot for OFSAA. Leading the way was Kristin O'Neill with a second-place finish. O'Neill will be unable to compete at OFSAA as she'll be playing for Ontario at the national under-18 hockey championships in Calgary, opening a spot for their alternate, Ward. Loyola's junior boys will also be going to OFSAA, thanks to a one-two finish by teammates Liam Murphy and Jaydon Wiggins for the second year in a row. "We like to push each other," Murphy said. "We were determined to make OFSAA." Murphy said the hilly course in Sudbury doesn't exactly suit him, but having won two years in a row at Kelso, uneven terrain doesn't seem to be limiting his success. "I'm more of a speed guy, but I'm fine with hills, I guess," he said. Rounding out the junior boys' team will be Daniel Taneguzzi (14th), Adam Lefebvre (31st) and Noah Andrade (35th). -- Herb Garbutt can be followed on Twitter @Herbgarbutt 23 | Thursday, October 24, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Evan Notley (far left) and Robert Scott led the Garth Webb Chargers to their first-ever team championship, the junior boys' division title at Tuesday's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference meet in Milton. Notley matched his fifth-place showing at last year's GHAC championships, and Scott -- a Grade 9 student racing up a division to help the school field a junior team -- was ninth. | photos by Eric Riehl -- Oakville Beaver -- @ Halton_Photog Midget runners crucial to Webb's junior victory continued from p.22 neighbour, Loyola. So it should have come as no surprise it would be the Hawks who Garth Webb was battling for the title. Loyola looked to have a decided edge when the Hawks' Liam Murphy and Jaydon Wiggins turned in a one-two finish. Garth Webb countered by placing three in the top 10, led by Evan Notley. Notley and Allison Chan were Webb's individual OFSAA qualifiers last year. Notley matched his fifth-place GHAC finish from a year ago, but the improvement was noticeable. Last year, he finished 55 seconds behind Murphy on the Kelso course; this year, that gap was narrowed to just 21 seconds. An even bigger boost came from Robert Scott, one of the Grade 9s moved into the junior ranks. Scott finished ninth and teammate David Gallant was 10th, while Brayden Tiels secured the victory by finishing 21st. "We want to be a running school," Notley said. "We have big plans for track season." "We're all pretty proud of the GHAC championship," Dailey said. "We want to build another strong track/crosscountry program." Oakville Trafalgar will send its midget girls' team to OFSAA after finishing second to Loyola. Though they didn't have a runner in the top 10, the Red Devils did have five in the top 20. "We knew it was a strong team but at the other meets, with more runners, it spreads everyone out," said OT coach Rob Sargant. "Our girls do well when they're clustered together, pushing one another. It's a young group and they're committed." Lucy Pennyfather was OT's top finisher in 11th, followed closely by Lucy He (13th), Kiana Wilson (16th), Emma Haugrud (17th) and Chloe Staines (19th). T.A. Blakelock's Alannah Constable (fifth) and King's Christian Collegiate's Nikki Butani (seventh) claimed two of the four individual qualifying spots in the midget girls' division. In the junior girls' race, Christine Morris (eighth) and Garth Webb's Chan (ninth) earned trips to OFSAA while last year's GHAC junior champ, Emily Raimer of T.A. Blakelock, will also return after finishing sixth in the senior girls' race. Also returning to the provincial high school championships is White Oaks' David Watson, who was fifth in the senior boys' race. Oakville runners also turned in some top-10 finishes that didn't qualify for OFSAA. Blakelock's Mitchell Barran was seventh and Loyola's Mark Stochl was ninth in the senior boys' race. Oakville Trafalgar's Robert Lasso was eighth in junior boys, White Oaks' Jessica Morris was ninth in senior girls and Abbey Park's Jack Guimaraes finished 10th in midget boys. -- Herb Garbutt AIRE ONE MADNESS SALE!
