The Oakville Children's Choir (OCC) is commemorating its 20th anniversary -- and planning to celebrate in style. "The choir is very proud to be recognizing 20 years of choral music-making in the Town of Oakville and will be celebrating this milestone through a variety of choral concerts, alumni visits, and special appearances throughout the year," according to Sarah Morrison, the choir's artistic director. Its founding artistic director, Glenda Crawford, will return in 2014 as a guest artist. Crawford formed the OCC in 1994 and, under her leadership, it won numerous choral awards and honours, including gold and silver medals at the 2004 Choir Olympics in Germany and finished as finalists at the CBC National Radio Competition the same year. As part of the 20th anniversary season, the senior and chamber choirs will travel to Riga, Latvia, to compete in the 2014 World Choir Games next July and then on to performances in Estonia and Finland following the competition. The choristers' strong performance at the Games last year helped them earn a spot at Oakville Children's Choir celebrates 20th anniversary Hungary, Germany, Greece, Argentina and the Netherlands. The 19th OCC season was one for the books, with gold standings at the World Choir Games in the senior and chamber categories, winning the 2012 Oakville Arts Award in the Arts Group category and the intermediate choir taking first place at the Ontario Music Festival Association national level competition. The OCC boasts six choirs, from the Little Notes Preparatory Chorus for singers aged four to six, through to the newest addition, a boys' and young men's choir called A Few Good Men, who sing under the watchful eye of conductor Dave Anderson. The organization is welcoming its newest conductor, Kate Gurnham, for the upcoming season. Gurnham will join fellow conductors Anderson, Jennifer Johnson and Charlene Pauls. Choristers are active in the community, working with organizations such as ErinoakKids, ArtHouse of Oakville and The Lighthouse Foundation.
