Council eliminated option to sell last year continued from p.1 Option two would involve keeping the estate intact, but leasing out the building. A third option -- to sell the property to a third party -- was eliminated by council in October 2012 because it would be against the wishes of the waterfront estate's original owner, James A. Gairdner, who donated it to the town. Gairdner bequeathed Gairloch to the Town of Oakville in 1971 for the residence and the land to be used as an art gallery and public park. In a report to the committee, the Town's Commissioner of Corporate Services Gord Lalonde stated no change would be coming to Gairloch's status anytime soon. "Since the report to council in 2012, it has become clear Oakville Galleries will not be in a position to move for at least five years and it is content to remain at the Gairloch site," he said. "Continued use of the facility by Oakville Galleries precludes using the estate house for other uses or leasing it. "Since any alternate use of Gairloch Gardens would affect the use of the facility by the Galleries, and since the Galleries will be using the facilities for the foreseeable future, it is premature to carry this investigation further at this time." The report noted the Town's Facilities and Construction Management department would carry out maintenance and rehabilitation at a cost of $502,100 over the next five years. Some of these improvements include new fire escapes, removal of steps at entrances and exits, repairs to some windows and doors, painting and caulking. The Town's Parks and Open Space department is also proceeding with landscape rehabilitations to the lands adjacent to the building, including repairs to stairs and pathways, adding exterior lighting at a cost of $245,000. Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act barrier removal projects -- projected to cost around $300,000 and include enlarging the estate's entrance, modifications to the stairs, accessible washrooms and enlarging the exit and interior doors -- are currently on hold pending decision of the final use for the facility. Repairs to the seawall are not considered a priority. Lalonde said in the report that a 2013 request for information regarding possible public/private uses of the estate house resulted in only one request to tour the facility. 3 | Friday, October 25, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 23 Artscene Classified 21 27 Rabba, New Homes, QSI Windows & Doors, Dietitians of Canada, Michael's, RBC Financial Group *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes VERSACE.COM - AVAILABLE AT VERSACE BOUTIQUES AND: OMNI JEWELCRAFTERS · (905) 339-7604 309 LAKESHORE RD EAST · OAKVILLE · ON For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com DENTISTRY FOR CHILDREN means...
