FLEMING, Kathleen I. (Kaye) (nee Ewen) R.N. Peacefully, on October 21, 2013 at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, in her 96th year. Born in Hamilton to Thomas and Ella Ewen, grew up on the family farm on Ewen Road in West Hamilton, and trained as a Registered Nurse at Hamilton General Hospital. Beloved wife and proud partner of the late Dr. J. Douglas H. Fleming (1991), survived by children Jane (Kelowna), John and Barbara (Oakville) and Mary and Larry Ricciardelli (Hamilton); grandchildren Graham (Mary Scott) and Megan Fleming (Sean McCarthy), and Miguel Ceron; and great-granddaughter Adair Scott-Fleming. Predeceased by siblings Bill, Beth, Isabel, Dorothea and Allan. A proud and dignified woman for whom family, community and service to others formed the centre of her life. She cherished her children and grandchildren, and focused much of her life-long commitment to community work on the needs of children. Active at local, provincial and national levels in Board work for over 60 years, and until the end, she was proudest of her work with the Children's Aid Society, chairing the Wentworth County Board of Directors through amalgamation with that of Hamilton, followed by a term as the first Chair of the Hamilton Wentworth CAS Board, and later as President of the Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies. The list of other organizations to which she gave her time, commitment and passion, is long. Notable examples include the boards of Hamilton Civic Hospitals, the Ontario Legal Aid Committee and The Older Women's Network, latterly known as "Hamilton Cares." A woman of strong Christian conviction, she was a member of St. Paul's United Church, Dundas, and later of McNab Presbyterian Church, Hamilton. The family extends its gratitude for their warm care to Karen Goyer and her remarkable team at Delmanor Glen Abbey, Mum's cherished home for the past 4 years, and to Doctors Rodger Glover and Hanif Jamal and the extraordinary nursing team on 4E and 4W for their excellent and compassionate care for our Mum during her final days and hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road, Oakville ON L6K 1E1 (www.koprivataylor.com). Cremation has taken place. There will be a Celebration of Life at the funeral home on Saturday, November 2nd at 1:00 p.m. with a reception following. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Kaye's memory to either the Children's Aid Society of Hamilton Summer Camp program (hamiltoncas.com) or the Oakville Hospital Foundation Capital Fund (oakvillehospitalfoundation.com).
