WIST student Lyndsey Thomas picks up Athena Scholarship A local resident was one of four women honoured by the Centre for Skills Development and Training during a recent open house. Oakville's Lyndsey Thomas, a Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) student, was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Athena Scholarship Fund for excelling academically and technically in the 2013 WIST program, which offers an opportunity for women to gain gender-sensitive, in-class training and on-the-job training to prepare them for employment in skilled trades. The Athena Scholarship Fund is supported through the Oakville Community Foundation, a registered charitable public foundation that serves the local community. The recognition took place at the centre's Bay Area Learning location, 860 Harrington Court, in Burlington. Also honoured were, Carly Burns of Burlington and Tanja Almon of Hamilton -- Liberty Karp of Toronto also received a $500 WIST Residential Construction Council of Central Ontario (RESCON) Scholarship during the event. The women were selected as scholarship recipients for preparing for careers in the skilled trades, demonstrating leadership, and serving as advocates and mentors to others considering careers in the same field -- the scholarships are meant to help supplement the cost of tools in their respective fields. "The Centre for Skills Development and Training's mission is to provide people with opportunities to build better futures," Kathy Mills, the centre's chief administrative officer. The centre offers the WIST program in partnership with the Ontario Women's Directorate, Canadian Women's Foundation, RESCON and Mohawk College. The 29-week, hands-on, skilled-trades training program allows 22 women to learn the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed for careers in the industry.
