Chiropodist LISA CONLIN 905-632-1414 Vice Principal of School Culture KING'S CHRISTIAN COLLEGIATE Q: A: I recently went for a hearing test and the audiologist told me to protect my ears from noise. What can I do? Your ears are delicate organs. By taking a few simple steps to protect them, you may be able to prevent hearing loss caused by excessive noise. To protect yourself from noise: · Pay attention to noise in your workplace. If the sound level exceeds 85 dB SPL, reduce the noise level or wear ear protectors. · Lower the volume of your television, stereo and iPod. Take special care if you use headphones or earbuds. · Be careful not to turn up your car stereo volume too loudly to compensate for noise from the engine or the wind. · Wear custom noise filters or solid earplugs if you go to rock concerts or nightclubs. Take a break so your ears can rest, and don't stand near loudspeakers. · Wear headphones or solid earplugs for outstanding noise protection if you use noisy equipment such as drills, lawnmowers, etc. Custom protectors available: Hunting, Swimming, Industrial, Sleeping, Communication, Audio and Music. Call us more information Q: I have a heel spur. What is that and how is it treated? A: A heel spur is the result of over-stretching a particular Q: My child is preparing for Grade 9. How can I encourage leadership in high school? A: As I spoke with an elementary school principal, he also wondered what happens to his school's investment in student leadership as Grade 8 students transition to high school. Great question. While leadership skills continue to be developed and coached in students throughout high school, many opportunities also exist for Grade 9 students to take initiative, dive into leadership roles, and use their strengths immediately-- Model United Nations, Robotics, Student Council, volunteering, athletics, and the arts are examples. From day one, new students have much to contribute. Simply getting involved in school activities exposes students to leadership opportunities and enables teachers or coaches to recognize and extract individual strengths. There is rich diversity in the styles and types of leadership--from those who enjoy being front and centre to those who quietly lead behind the scenes. If being a leader means being a person with influence, there are countless ways to be a positive leader every day. All students can be encouraged to intentionally reach out to others: they can notice, invite, join, care, understand, appreciate and include. So, there is always room to use and develop individual leadership abilities. Your child's leadership will depend on their identity, interests, confidence and strengths. Recognize and celebrate the positive leadership you observe in your child as you nudge and support new risks and growth. 289.837.1137 2387 Trafalgar Road, Oakville www.pureaudiology.ca muscle on the bottom of the foot, called the plantar fascia. When the muscle is constantly over-stretched (for example, with each step you take), your body develops thickened tissue where the plantar fascia attaches to the bone in your heel. Having this thickened tissue underneath your heel becomes painful with every step and can even be painful with the first step taken in the morning. Typically heel spurs develop over time or when a new activity (power walking, jogging or running) is started. Treatment of heel spurs involves visiting a Chiropodist for a full lower leg examination, specifically a gait analysis to see if the position of your foot while walking is overstretching/straining the muscles on the bottom of your foot. Your Chiropodist will evaluate your footwear, advise you on specific footwear do's and don'ts for your foot type and may even suggest Custom Made Foot Orthotics. Custom Made Foot Orthotics are inserts that correctly align your foot so as not to over stretch/strain the muscles on the bottom of your foot. Therefore fall is the perfect time to clean vents, screens, windows, garbage cans and other areas typically neglected during regular maintenance. · Vent covers: Make sure your air vent covers are in good shape. If not, vacuum them and wipe clean with a damp wash. You can also try running them through the dishwasher if your home has smaller vents. · Window screens: To clean summer's bugs, tree sap, dirt, bird droppings and other debris from window screens, first remove them and lay on a flat, smooth, cloth-covered surface. Scrub with a bristle brush dipped in a hot water and liquid dishwashing soap solution. Rinse well. Tap the edge of the screen with one hand to remove excess water and set the screen in the sun to dry. · Garbage cans: Empty, then spray the insides with a disinfectant cleaner. Allow the cleanser to work, then scrub with a nylon toilet brush. Wipe down the outside with a sponge or nylon scrubber dipped in hot water and heavy-duty cleaning solution. Rinse and let air dry. · Windows: Fall is the best time of year to clean windows. Clean windows don't last long after a spring rain or summer dust storm. And fall air is cooler so the glass dries more evenly, with less streaking. Mix a bucket of hot water with a teaspoon of liquid degreasing dish soap. Apply with a sponge or nylon scrubber. Wipe with a squeegee. If you have paint specks on your windows, wet the specks with the cleaning solution, then scrape with a new razor blade in a scraper holder. Only go in one direction. Otherwise, you may scratch or damage the glass. This flu season, protect your family by getting the flu vaccine at the start of the season. Oakville Dr. Helene Grubisa Q: A: I have heard a lot about INVISALIGNTM...what is it? InvisalignTM is an orthodontic technique which utilizes a series of clear removable trays to straighten teeth. It is an alternative to traditional metal braces, a less noticeable way to correct crooked or spaced teeth. InvisalignTM is a great option for those who have been apprehensive about traditional braces. With InvisalignTM there are no orthodontic braces or wires. Instead, 3-D computer technology is used to fabricate multiple custom trays to move your teeth. You will wear each aligner for approximately two weeks, removing them only for brushing and eating. With each new aligner, your teeth will move gradually, day by day, week by week, until they have achieved the final alignment that your Align Technology® certified orthodontist has prescribed. Finally, you will have the smile that you have always wanted, and without the "train tracks". Consultations are complimentary at our orthodontic office, with no referral required. At your first visit I will explain the INVISALIGNTM technique and together we can decide if it is the right treatment for you. 905-845-2811 340 Kerr Street, Oakville Free Delivery & 15% Senior Discount Oakville's Professional Services Provider of the Year Nominee and Platinum Award Winner ( Voted Best Independent Pharmacy in Oakville) www.leonpharmacy.ca Leon Pharmacy Established 2006 | 1200 Speers Road Unit 10 Oakville L6L 2X4 905.845.9923 | pat@maidshomeservices.com | www.themaids.com Call 905.257.7111 to book an appointment.
