High School Sports Oakville Trafalgar captured its second girls' field hockey bronze in three years, defeating Pickering 2-1 in the bronze-medal game in Waterloo. The Red Devils finished the provincial tournament with a 5-1 record. Their lone loss came in the semifinals, a 3-0 defeat at the hands of three-time defending OFSAA champion Resurrection. Loyola's bronze came at the cross-country championships in Sudbury, where the Hawks finished third in the midget girls' division. Loyola scored a total of 214 points, well ahead of the 266-point total of fourth-place Clinton St. Anne's. Points are determined by adding the placings of each school's top four finishers, with the lowest score winning. Megan Nixon (32nd), Sophia Borea (46), Andrea Wallin (65) and Victoria Corbett (71) made Loyola one of only two schools to have four runners place in the top 80. The Hawks also performed well in senior girls' competition, placing 13th in the team standings. More coverage of the two OFSAA medal wins will appear in an upcoming edition of the Beaver. Holy Trinity to face Nelson in Sr. girls hoops Tier 1 final Loyola's two-year reign as Halton senior girls' basketball Tier 1 champions has come to an end. Loyola was upset 47-46 by the Nelson Lords Monday in the Halton semifinals. It marked the Hawks' first loss in league play since 2011. Nelson will face the Holy Trinity Titans in the championship game Friday at Sheridan College (4:15 p.m.). Trinity pulled off a mild upset of its own Monday, defeating the Bishop Reding Royals 47-34 in Milton. Both teams were 9-2 during the regular season, but Reding finished ahead of Trinity due to the head-to-head tiebreaker. Oakville Blades defenceman Greg Campbell, Toronto Lakeshore Patriots blueliner Michael Prapavessis and Milton Icehawks goaltender Ben Blacker were all named to the team following a recent selection camp in Oakville. Canada East opened the six-team tournament Monday with a 6-2 loss to Russia, despite scoring the first two goals of the contest. "Playing in Canada, it's a lot more dump-and-chase, hard-hitting hockey," Campbell said. "We're probably the least-talented team here, sizing up against the most talented (Russia). They're so good with their hands... In the first period, I thought we played really well, chipping pucks in, hitting. Then we got away from our game, and that's where they started burying (pucks) against us." Campbell, an 18-year-old Oakville Trafalgar High School student, said Canada East is still optimistic about its chances despite the tough start. All teams in the tournament qualify for the playoffs, with the top squad in each division earning a bye to the semifinals. Canada East is scheduled to face the United States today (Wednesday). "As our coach said, we'll have some bumps in the road. Luckily enough, our bumps already happened in the first game. It's all up from here. We'll show basically the world (Wednesday) what Canada East hockey is all about versus the Americans." Campbell has one goal, seven assists and 23 penalty minutes in 14 games this season for the Blades. He has received interest from several American universities, including Penn State, Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale. Campbell's defence partner at the World Jr. A Challenge is Prapavessis, a former schoolmate. The 17-year-old Prapavessis currently ranks third in scoring for Toronto Lakeshore, including a team-high 19 assists.
