Matheson scored one of the most significant goals in Canadian sports history at last year's Olympic Summer Games in London, breaking a 1-1 tie late in stoppage time against France to lift Canada to the bronze medal. The White Oaks grad was also the guest speaker at the evening, sharing memories of her early days with the OSC and talking about how coaches, team managers and event volunteers helped her develop into the player and person she is today. Many other awards were presented on the evening as the OSC recognized its most committed volunteers as well as its top coaches, officials and players. Brian Ratcliffe, who has served the club for more than 35 years, received the President's Award that recognizes untiring commitment to the OSC. Richard Hill was named Volunteer of the Year for constantly demonstrating the outstanding qualities of a devoted, reliable and committed volunteer. Jake Camara and Kamal Gill were presented with Young Volunteer of the Year awards, recognizing their promise, respect and enthusiasm as event organizers. Phil Martino (girls under-15 B) and Greg Vagasky (boys U15 B) received accolades as the club's top rep coaches. House league coaching awards went to Craig Todd, Nelson Damaso, Paul Filice, Chuck Perry, Warren Milko, Anirudh Nathan, Josh Egan, Philip Habib, Daniel Caruso, Phillip Defreitas, Edward Molnar, Hamid Vossoughi, Ann Mcculloch, Anthony Quinn, Kirsten Ashall, Teresa Semren, Victoria Kuta, Hubert Bandurski, Peter Longo, Ken Kyriacou, Richard Sdao, Eugenio D'Annibale and Sharon Bolger. Outstanding Youth Player awards were presented to Madison Babineau (female) and Dragan Andic (male). Daniel Zaiter, Tashiana Lusterio, Jacob Gorski, Amgad Ramzy, Jordan Van Geyn and Mahadeo Seegobin were each recipients of a Referee Award. Greg Allen, Dalton Bew and Ross Sloan notched the Oakville markers, and Evan Buitenhuis made 24 saves in a losing cause. The Blades (8-8-0) have now been outscored 29-13 in their past five contests. Oakville will play three games in the next five days, including a rare Monday night home game. Oakville will visit the Kingston Voyageurs tomorrow (Thursday), then host the Orangeville Flyers Saturday and the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots Monday. Both home Sports Briefs games will be played at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex at 7:30 p.m. Prior to Monday's contest, the Blades will hold Remembrance Day ceremonies. Intermediate Hornets back in action The Oakville Hornets intermediate AA team was scheduled to play its first Provincinal Women's Hockey League game in more than two weeks last night (Tuesday) against the Toronto Leaside Wildcats at Joshua's Creek Arenas. The Hornets' next league contest is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 12 in Barrie. Oakville (2-22) will then be home to the Etobicoke Junior Dolphins Friday, Nov. 15, an 8:30 p.m. start at Joshua's Creek. Bantam Hornets win tournament in OT Rachel Bolland's overtime goal won the championship for the Oakville bantam BB Hornets at the recent Pink the Rink girls' hockey tournament in Etobicoke. Bolland's marker came 22 seconds into the extra session after the Hornets and Leaside had played to a 0-0 deadlock in regulation time. Oakville advanced to the final with a 2-1 victory over Etobicoke. In round-robin play, Oakville shut out all three of its opponents, blanking Leaside 3-0, North York 3-0 and North Bay 1-0. The Hornets then continued their flawless defensive play in the quarter-finals, downing Burlington 2-0. Overall, Oakville outshot its opponents 132-36 in the tournament.
