Once anxious and withdrawn with limited ability to communicate, the seven-year-old now has the confidence to try new things, make friends and reach out to others around him. MacCartney's progress was recognized and celebrated last Friday (Nov. 1), when he received one of four 2013 Pride & Joy Awards from the ErinoakMacCartney Bowes Kids Centre for Treatment and Development at an evening ceremony at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. "MacCartney used to have so much anxiety and was easily stressed if things did not go exactly as planned," said MacCartney's mother Lyndsay Winegarden. "The support received through speech therapy, social work, autism services, and workshops has expanded his world and brought him out of himself. I do not know where we would be without ErinoakKids." Established in 2010, the awards celebrate the achievement, determination and legacy of the more than 13,500 children and youths served by ErinoakKids each year -- this year's awards were presented by the Bank of Nova Scotia. MacCartney's award was given in the Branching Out category and honours an ErinoakKids client who advances in extracurricular activities and demonstrates camaraderie with others. This summer, MacCartney played soccer and participated in a cooking camp -- both local community programs.
