www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 31, 2013 | 8 Largest Rock'n Roll Party benefits ILC Foundation by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff Editor's note: certain pieces of identifying information on the families featured in this story have been withheld to protect their privacy. Oakville's Largest Rock 'n Roll Party this Saturday (Nov. 2) is looking to head Back to the 60s this year in an effort to support individuals and their families suffering from chronic pain conditions. The event, which has been put on in one form or another for the past 10 years, benefits the Improving the Life of Children (ILC) Foundation and its mission to help children across Canada suffering from all chronic pain disorders get the treatment they so desperately need. "Events like this are so important because they help to raise awareness about the needs of families in our community based on the gaps in access in the healthcare system. The ILC Foundation offers support programs that are influencing changes to bridge those gaps," said Sandy Smeenk, co-founder of ILC. "Ideally, we don't want people going to the U.S. to get the healthcare they need." In addition to supporting ILC programs such as its peer support network, one-on-one support and Canada's first 21-day rehabilitation program with McMaster Children's Hospital, proceeds from this year's event will help three families that have travelled to the U.S. for treatment. It affects only one in every 5,000 people and is marked by the inability of the col- lagen in the body to hold itself together. The family's health struggles began six years ago when mom and one of the Steckner children began experiencing profound fatigue, gastrointestinal issues and systemic, severe and debilitating pain -- the matriarch of the family had to quit her job as a result. After years of seeing dozens of doctors, specialists, alternative medicine practitioners and undergoing numerous expensive tests and scans, it was finally suggested by ILC the family see a geneticist where mom and all her three children were diagnosed with hereditary EDS. Through the foundation's peer support network, the Steckner family was referred to an EDS specialist and multi-disciplinary team in Baltimore, Maryland. · · · Hamilton's Brittany Crichton also lives with EDS and says the pain she experiences daily is an eight (on a one to 10 scale) on a good day. After three years of doctors, specialists and tests, Crichton and her family went to a Mayo Clinic in the U.S. just to have her diagnosis confirmed by a registered physician. Chrichton's battle with EDS leaves her covered in bruises and her legs so weak she has to spend much of her time in a wheelchair -- in addition, her hair began to fall out. She underwent two surgeries in the U.S. earlier this year and has since returned to school. · · · The Wells are yet another family living with EDS and say there is little understanding or support from medical specialists within the Halton, Hamilton and GTA health sciences networks, about the living challenges they face daily. The family has seen a geneticist in Baltimore who confirmed the children's advanced level of EDS is likely the result of mom and dad having the connective tissue disorder. The Wells family says they feel there is no other viable option than seeking care from a pediatric specialist in the U.S. · · · The fundraising party will be held at a new location this year at the 707 Galaxy Banquet Hall, 475 North Service Rd. E., and runs from 7:30 p.m.-1 a.m. Last year's event raised $16,000 and saw 300 guests attend -- organizers say they hope to top both of those totals Saturday. Entertainment will be provided by the Beatles-tribute band Liverpool 4, Whitney Houstontribute performer Geri Defoe, Rugged Roots, Grand Blvd., and Liquid Courage. There will also be tasting stations by Cora, Montfort, oyster bar by Shakers Tap and Grill, Sushi Hour, and Monastery Bakery and Deli, among other local restaurants. Tickets cost $40 and can be purchased online at www.oakvillerocknrollparty.com, by calling 416-822-3494, or at the door.
