Oakville Transit is considering various fare increases to balance the municipal contribution to transit operating costs. Town staff said recent provincial legislation requires additional spending on the delivery of specialized transit services. They also noted even with the proposed changes Oakville Transit fares continue to be among the lowest compared to similar-sized agencies in the GTA. Due to higher fuel costs and other inflation- Budget committee holding deliberations this month ary impacts, Oakville Transit is faced with higher operating costs. The phasing out of the seniors' discount for recreation programs and memberships, as well as the estimated costs of administering and enforcing the Building Code Act, will also be discussed during the meeting. "The rates and fees review is an important element of our annual budget process," said Ward 6 Councillor and Budget Chair Tom Adams. "We will be working towards our target of keeping the overall tax increase in line with inflation, reducing tax-supported debt, and building and maintaining our infrastructure. The review of rates and fees will occur in this context." Town staff said all submissions -- in person, written, email or social media, will be considered. Those wishing to appear before the budget committee as a delegate can register by emailing townclerk@oakville.ca or calling 905-815-6015 by noon tomorrow (Friday). Residents can also email comments to budget@oakville.ca. The proposed 2014 Rates and Fees can be reviewed at www.oakville.ca or the ServiceOakville customer service desk. The budget committee recommendations concerning rates and fees will be presented to council for approval on Monday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in council chambers in Town Hall. The recommendations will be implemented effective Jan. 1, 2014. The 2014 budget book will be released on Monday, Nov. 18 during a 9:30 a.m. meeting.
