www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 14, 2013 | 12 Do you really want Céline Dion hanging over your marriage? That's Life Guest Contributor Andy Juniper I recently heard a wedding planner say that of all the considerable and consequential decisions a future bride and groom make before their big day, the choice they often struggle with the most is what song to play for their First Dance, a.k.a. the Wedding Song. Because, you see, they want the song to not only express how truly, madly, deeply Audiology and Hearing Aid Centre Yes, we have INVISIBLE hearing instruments! And that's a tall order for any tune. Perhaps, too tall. Which is why I'm here to advise prospective brides and grooms to quit fretting and gnashing their teeth over this decision. Maybe they should go so far as to just randomly pick a song out of a hat. Or just ask a stranger on the street to decide. Because regardless of how much time and thought you invest, 10 years down the road the song you select will probably not sound quite as cool or unique, or anywhere near as perfect and poignant as you once thought. Naturally, I have no personal experience in this issue. The song my wife and I chose was positively perfect in all ways: Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight. A song so unique it made Time magazine's Top 10 Most Overplayed Wedding Songs (number eight, for those keeping score at home). Oh, and after our wedding, I learned that Clapton wrote the song about Pattie Boyd. The woman with whom he had a torrid affair, while she was married to George Harrison, who was Clapton's best friend at the time. Yikes. When selecting a wedding song, there are so many things that can go wrong. You might unwittingly choose one of those songs that's tethered to time and place and is destined to quickly become wincingly dated. Or, the artist singing what will be forever known as "your song," may end up in the tabloids for assorted assaults on the laws of common decency. Or, you may mistake the meaning of your ditty's lyrics, and the song you swore was a lyrical pledge of undying love, may well in fact be something else altogether. Consider: Every Breath You Take. Somehow The Police's 1983 mega-hit became a popular Wedding Song. Whenever fans tell Sting that it was their Wedding Song, he thinks: "Well, good luck." Because the song, which may seem like "a comforting love song" is actually about a sinister, controlling creep vowing to stalk his girlfriend, forever. I once made the mistake of telling an exfriend that The Bells' super-sappy 1970's hit Stay Awhile was the worst song ever, a song so sugary it could trigger diabetes. And she said that Stay Awhile was her Wedding Song. No surprise, our friendship soon unraveled. Speaking of things unraveling, I'm just thinking: what if you select a song like Céline Dion's The Power of Love. Are you not thusly manacling you and your betrothed to an interminable association with odious, over-sung power ballads? And, honestly, isn't marriage tough enough without having that hanging over your heads? Hmmm. Maybe you'd better continue fretting and gnashing your teeth over this considerable and consequential decision. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook or followed on Twitter, @theSportJesters Carpet · Oriental Rugs · Vinyl · Hardwood · Ceramics · Carpet · Oriental Rugs · Vinyl · Hardwood Carpet · Oriental Rugs · Vinyl · Hardwood · Ceramics · Carpet · Oriental Rugs · Vinyl · Hardwood · Ceramics Carpet · Oriental Rugs · Vinyl · Hardwood · Ceramics · Carpet · Oriental Rugs · Vinyl · Hardwood · Ceramics Expropriations Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.
